its being a time I've seen Linus using mechanical kind of screwdriver.. but i couldn't figure out which brand it is... reply  below if any one knows..9_9

No clue, but if you're looking for a screwdriver set I recommend this set a thousand times.  It's by FAR the best I've ever used.  The much longer bits make it possible to open devices most sets can't.

IMO 65 bucks for a good screwdriver with good exchangeable bits is a good deal. and, screwdrivers never get "outdated" :P

Absolutely. I've been thinking about getting the Snap-On ratchet for a while, and I probably will get it in the near future, but my non-ratcheting screwdriver is a Wera Kraftform Kompact 25. I've never understood why people cheap out on tools they'll use a lot.

I've bought some stuff from iFixit.  I wasn't impressed with most of it.  The bits that came with my iOpener kit were incredibly cheap, although that's not why I bought it.  Their Jimmy was supposed to be stiffer than a regular iSesamo, but it just feels flimsy, and the end is (for some reason) thicker, making it more difficult to slip into devices.  The only thing I really like is the iOpener itself.

 

Linus gets paid to say stuff is great.  While I'm not suggesting he'd recommend something terrible, I think (like most of us) he's more inclined to overlook flaws if there is a big paycheck behind it.

Speaking of overlooking things, I forgot to mention a couple things about that screwdriver set I linked.  The first is the one thing I don't like about it.  When you extend the handle, the magnetism is weaker.  I'm not sure why.  Maybe they put the magnet in the handle.

 

The second is that it's designed for working on smaller electronics, like laptops.  It will work just fine on a desktop, but if you want a bulky handle like the one Linus uses, it's not the right choice.  It's perfect for me, because I mostly work on laptops and tablets.

If you are using it often and every day, getting high quality tools is worth it. It works out cheaper to buy a screwdriver for 65 dollars that lasts for over ten years than to buy an el cheapo 10 dollar screwdriver every 12-18 months.

Well I'm not sure it's fair to say it has to cost that much.  I know I'm starting to sound like a salesman, but I've been using that $25 set for a few years now (quite regularly, I repair computers), with no degradation.

Snap On will come to any place you want if there in your local area.

Just call them up and they book a time, there very popular in Australia I think there X3 Trucks in my city (Mackay North Qld)

And bloody expensive in Aust I think I paid $90 for that screw drive 10 years ago.

If I were to buy a precision set (as good as the iFixit set is, I don't consider magnetic bitholders 'precision'), I'd get something from Wera, since they're the only ones I'm aware of that have locking bitholders for 4mm bits.

Only problem with that is that they don't use 4mm hex shank, so while they may not use a proprietary bit, they also don't use the ubiquitous type of bit. *grumble*

Linus uses a Snap-On racheting screwdriver which is really expensive. I have the Williams WRS-1 which I think is fantastic and costs about half the price. It's made by the same company but Williams is a lower tier brand.

Correction: Magnetic bitholders are terrible. They don't have to bring down the entire screwdriver, but they're no substitute for a locking chuck or rapidaptor or whatnot.

And he's actually explained before that the ratcheting is convenient because he doesn't even move the handle, he twists the shaft on the knurled section, which end up being faster.

 

As for the iFixit kit, well... The only good thing about the 54 bit kit was the variety, but the 64 bit kit is actually really well made. The driver handle is hefty, solid, and well designed, the case is well thought out and well built, the bits aren't chinesium and there's basically one for every screw used in modern consumer electronics. It has downsides, pretty much all centered around the magnetic bitholder, but I'd rather have that kit than 64 entire screwdrivers.

Two major reasons:

-They inherently have play. It can be improved by making the bitholder tighter and/or longer, but there's only so much you can do, and they'll never be as solid as a good locking bitholder.

-They don't secure the bit. It doesn't take a lot of force to take the bit out of the bitholder, meaning you'll actually occasionally have the bit stay on the screw when you pull the driver away.

 

Though, like I said, a magnetic bitholder doesn't mean the entire screwdriver is terrible. It's just one undesirable part.
