Delidding Zen?

I'm sure no one knows yet...

But just in case...

Do any of you "insiders" or "famous" tech guys have any idea if Zen will be soldered?  I personally hope they are as crappy as intel chips have been, with their huge gaps from adhesive and crappy tims just begging for another 20-50c be knocked off.  Seriously increases the bang for buck (for me at least).

These chips seem incredibly promising, assuming intel doesn't have a secret weapon hiding (which they probably do since they've been doing crappy ~5% ipc gains per "generation".  I'm sure theres tons of R&D money being poured into something.

I know AMD has a tendancy to solder, but considering these will be 14nm, I'm hoping they don't (once again for my own selfish reasons).

Didn't Linus literally just make a video a few months ago saying how insignificant the decrease in temps is by deliding?

Chill for a bit.

We don't know whether Zen will be soldered. That rumor hinted to the 8-core part being soldered, but multiple articles suggest soldering a smaller chip is a very very bad idea.

I wouldn't get excited on Zen if I was you. It will come out, and when it does we will look at bench and judge.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

OMG lol lol lol.  Dude... if your gonna make this kind of post...  At least be somewhat informed.

Guess that's why when I delid 6700ks they can do 1.39v @ 4.7ghz without really breaking 50c after an hour stress test? (edit: on an $80 air cooler mind you)

Trust me I won't be preordering anything, but I would think there are some chips floating around and theres a chance someone has the info.

And yes soldering small dies can break them over time from heating/cooling.

If you don't find this thread useful, feel free to let it die :)

That video's forum thread was full of people who actually researched before delidding, pointing out that Linus used TIM that's not good for delidding. In reality you can gain a lot of temps if you use the right TIM (but it comes with its own risk).

I'll give you a tidbit: don't believe everything Linus says. Judging by the quality of his last couple videos, you should be especially skeptical of him.

I mean, I really want to know too lol

But patience will help us all make the right call when Zen comes out. (I made the mistake of hopping on the RX 480 hype train, even to believe wccf when they said it would hit Fury performance. Never again).

I hear you loud and clear on that, I've been burned enough to learn my lessons, but I'm definitely excited for Zen, but also will not be paying a penny till I see real world results.

GG thread...

on topic: if you really want to know, and want to know the benefits, keep an eye on extreme overclockers when zen comes out. the people who know now have their face taped shut about it, and you better believe all the OCers are gonna run out to give zen a trashing when it releases :P

We discussed this with a news topic a week ago (although some, not naming names, **cough **cough Patrick) kept saying it was Xena Warrior Princess CPU or something.  but, yes, I believe they delidded a Zen or other AMD CPU to show it was soldiered. It was closed by moderators.

Interesting even if disappointing lol.

You can delid Haswell-E and Broadwell-E which are both soldered, it's just a pain in the ass and requires a special fixture to do it.  So if you want to go hardcore, it'll be possible.

Workstation:  13700k @ 5.5Ghz || Gigabyte Z790 Ultra || MSI Gaming Trio 4090 Shunt || TeamGroup DDR5-7800 @ 7000 || Corsair AX1500i@240V || whole-house loop.

LANRig/GuestGamingBox: 9900nonK || Gigabyte Z390 Master || ASUS TUF 3090 650W shunt || Corsair SF600 || CPU+GPU watercooled 280 rad pull only || whole-house loop.

Server Router (Untangle): 13600k @ Stock || ASRock Z690 ITX || All 10Gbe || 2x8GB 3200 || PicoPSU 150W 24pin + AX1200i on CPU|| whole-house loop

Server Compute/Storage: 10850K @ 5.1Ghz || Gigabyte Z490 Ultra || EVGA FTW3 3090 1000W || LSI 9280i-24 port || 4TB Samsung 860 Evo, 5x10TB Seagate Enterprise Raid 6, 4x8TB Seagate Archive Backup ||  whole-house loop.

Laptop: HP Elitebook 840 G8 (Intel 1185G7) + 3080Ti Thunderbolt Dock, Razer Blade Stealth 13" 2017 (Intel 8550U)

But have you tried an FX chip?  For even me itd be hard to convince myself to delid if they are solder (until warranty is out that is), especially if its similar to FX chips in terms of difficulty.  Not that I've tried one, but my "sources" tell me they are a good bit harder than intels enthusiast line despite both being soldered.

Edit: I see what you did there, thanks for trying to make me feel better lol. I shall Delid a Zen chip mark my words!

(pretend this is fine print. The above comment represents a 5 year window)

My personal guess is it will be, since AMD's targeting enthusiast and their FX chips have been soldered, so it only make sense.
