How to move your OS to an SSD

DakotaDidYou

Hello again, everybody. I am having a little problem. I got a new SSD for my rig and I moved some games to it and my photoshop stuff, but Acronis and Samsungs data transfer software won't let me just move my OS. Thanks!

Tbh, It would be easier to install windows on the SSD and start from scratch. Windows 10 does not like to be jolted at all and if there is even a small error it could mean major issues for you in the future. Trust me, I never wanted to do it, but as long as you keep your motherboard the same you wont have to pay for anything.

No. A fresh install is the best way to go.

The new version of Samsung Migration lets you move the OS. The SSD needs to be empty for it to work.

Samsung already comes with their own program, why bother grabbing one from a 3rd party.

I know. I'm just saying they offer a free one, as the point you made when he mentioned Macrium was that Samsungs is free.

When I put an SSD in my PC, I used this free cloning software and it worked great.

I have used this software 3 times in the past and it failed ones. Just make sure to backup your data if you end up using a software that you don't trust.

if you do end up using a 3rd party software like AOMEI Partition Assistant (which there is also a free option) use  "Migrate OS to SSD " Don't clone your drive, that might not work all the time from HDD to SSD!

Fire up the program and just select c drive partition.

Done it a few months ago on my clients system. There is the option to select partitions instead of the entire drive.

Can you post a screen shot of your program?

Seriously I would just reinstall. Migrating from a HDD to an SSD can sometimes cause some problems, for example Windows doesn't always pick up that it's now installed on an SSD, and as such doesn't enable/disable some features which make it run decently on an SSD (e.g. Enable TRIM, Disable Superfetch)

You will have a better time just re-imaging, you can then copy any documents etc across from your HDD anyway

Yes. Then I went through about two more menus till and the one I got stuck on is the one where it says I have more things on my HDD than my SSD and want's me to select what I don't want copied but it only lets me do it for certain categories so it still says my SSD doesn't have enough memory to transfer over to my SSD.
