What options do I have in future?

Victor100

Hey guys! I'm currently in my 4th semester (second year) of University, majoring in Computer Science with an emphasis in Software Development.  And I was curious, what options do I have for the future, as in what can I go into/what type of programming is available to me (if that makes sense)? I know I really don't want much to do with mobile development or web page development. I hear these other types (front end, back end, etc...), and was curious what exactly they are/do. And if some of you have experience in them.

As well what would YOU recommend learning?

Classes I've taken:

A beginning C++ class,

A intermediate C++ class,

A Unix and Networking Programming class.

What I'm in now:

A data structure and algorithm analysis class (C++),

A iOS mobile programming class,

This coming Spring semester:

A Java class,

A database class,

An assembler programming class.

So far there have been a few things that have not interested me at all.

1) Network programming, I didn't have such a good experience with this. While I did do fine in it, the whole topic just didn't grab my attention. Is this something I can move on in careers without knowing too much about it?

2) Shell scripting, again, something I really had no interest in. Same question, is this something I can move on in careers without knowing too much about it?

3) Mobile programming, just not my thing.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've only shown a disinterest in mobile, networking, and shell scripting programming.

I've absolutely enjoyed my C++ courses, and my current data structure and algorithm analysis class.

I would hope that just a few disinterests would be fine and wouldn't spell the end of this for me.

Computing science is a very general subject if you're into programming I suggest focusing more for your hons.bye software engineering.

Shouldn't this have been something you looked into before getting so deep into the degree?

I feel you though. Sometimes you realize it's just not what you want to do. I got pretty deep into a CPA designation before I realized it wasn't for me.

I did look into it before I even started. For the most part, it all seemed so interesting to me, but as I started taking courses some of the topics were.... in a way boring and not what I expected.

I get a sense of satisfaction when I complete something programming related, but in the networking, shell scripting, and mobile iOS classes, that sense was not there.

I plan on really focusing on the topics that do interest me.

As of right now, I'm really open to different areas of CS, and I'm looking for new things to study and learn.

Try game coding... you will be surprised how far you can go with a good coding background and how interesting things can get when you switch to something that has such fast feedback...
I recently coded a advanced collision based climbing mechanic (Similar to Assassins creed) and despite my coding background being so terrible i found it really fun cause of the problem solving.

You could look in to Advanced AI systems for video games aswell... very rarely do i see a well thought out AI set that makes sense and works logically.

might be worth a try

personally I am interested in data control and concurrency. Maybe look at that? Databases and multithreading.

AI does highly interest me, my University does offer a course on AI that I plan to take soon. And I'm currently in my school's robotics team, working on their AI ground unit, which has been so much fun!

Game coding is something that has always sat in the back of my mind as a potential option, it seems like a fun thing to do. I haven't ruled that out yet.

In Austria you normally do university projects. if you are smart enough, you do projects that dont interesst you a lot, but cover a huge variety of topics.

I hated PHP, but since i made a project with it, i could even see myself being a Backend Developer.

Game coders are very few and far between... my studio is currently looking to expand our team, but finding people with the right potential is really hard (we would rather give someone an opportunity then get a seasoned expert)
if you want to get a leg up... DL UE4 and just create raw mechanics for people to play with... you will find work really fast if you don't overdo the visuals

I know people who have gotten jobs with decent pay just from creating mechanics with a basic shapes to show everything off
