Where do you buy a bga1168 processor?

Hey guys,

I'm new to this site so I'm not sure whether I posted this in the right section but this is my problem,

Recently I bought a lenovo g50 on a 50% sale. It has a I3-5005u cpu with a socket of bga1168. I want to upgrade the cpu to the i7-5557u. I tried looking up online and couldn't find one, if you guys have any idea where to get one please let me know.

My last laptop is a lenovo T510 with a cpu of i7-620m. The difference is a 0.1 between this and my new laptop.

Thanks

It's a laptop, you can't upgrade the CPU. You would need to replace the entire motherboard.

Is the CPU removable? It's almost always directly soldered onto the motherboard, to save space, and as no one's gonna swap out their laptop CPU...

But if it is, you'll have a hard-time searching for compatible CPUs - but try craigslist, ebay, etc. as you may only get second hand.

Nothing to see here ;)

even if you get that CPU off the mobo, good luck finding a BGA CPU for sale

There are actually plenty on used sites like ebay.

You can’t change out the CPU. That’s not how BGA works.

BGA stands for Ball Grid Array, and those balls underneath the CPU are soldered to the mainboard by a very expensive machine. Unless you have one of those or are Louis Rossmann, you can’t do that without breaking the laptop.

Here we have a shop called the Currys Pc World. They do it for you that is if you provide the component. They charge little.

Lol, they probably don’t do BGA chips. No one is going to charge a small amount for switching out a BGA processor, because they’re not meant to be switched out.

Oh God seriously? I asked them if I could upgrade the cpu if I wanted to in the future and they were like yeah just bring it to us...

I should probably open the laptops in the shops just to see whether I could change them and then buy...

I guess noone gives u that option ??

Yeah, but you need £8000 to £15000 on the bga machine to put it on the motherboard, or find a person who has spent that much money buying one and is trained to use it, I doubt anyone will do the work on it for a reasonable amount, you are better off just buying a new laptop.

yea but there are many repair shops that deal with bga stuff

not saying anyone can

but it is possible to remove and place a bga chip if you know what you're doing

Yes, and Linus actually did a video with Louis Rossman involving the process (though with GPU). However it is far from easy and can go suddenly wrong. You need a specialised machine BTW.

It’s called a “ZIF” zero insertion force. All laptops have that style or one of that variation of style to secure the cpu. Just like desktops. I’ve only run across low end Celeron netbooks that. We’re completely soldered. We are/were talking a i7 ultrabook. Clown in the future don’t comment on disassembly of something unless you have actually done it.

Why do I keep running across threads that suggest my processor is soldered to my motherboard? Has anyone other than me actually taken these laptops apart?

I am talking about a “laptop” not a netbook where I have seen the cpu soldered in I’ve only seen a zif variation used in a real laptop

A: No. BGA CPUs, like this one, are soldered on a motherboard, as such, upgrading or replacing them is very very difficult.

I was just getting ready to refute everyone in this (old af) thread who claimed you can't replace a laptop CPU.

Okay, I have to admit, after doing my own research, they were technically right. You technically can't replace a laptop (BGA) CPU because it is soldered on it

("you don't say"?, yeah yeah...)

The only reason I was led to believe otherwise was the fact that you could buy BGA CPUs on places like eBay and Aliexpress. Now I know such listings are only for those who have the special equipment.

So to anyone who actually bought a BGA CPU, you just eff'd your money up lol.

TIL I guess.
