AIO Watercooling a 1070, could it be worth it?

With the increased price gap between the 1070 and the 1080 (which is on average €300 in Europe), could it for once be worth it to watercool the lower end card?
 

  • a Kraken G10 or Corsair HG10 set you back about €40
  • a Corsair H80i V2 or NZXT X31 sets you back about €100

To keep things simple, lets stick with frames per euro. Would the you get more frames per euro for the upgrade to watercooling than you would get from upgrading to a 1080?
Also, keep in mind we know fairly little about GPU Boost 3.0's handling in a water cooled setup.

Water cooling won't help you with higher clock on GTX 1070.

You will get exactly the same OC on air vs water.

The only difference will be temps and noise.

If you have decent water cooling system it will be dead silent.

And temps would be always under 60°C even at max OC and 100% load.

 

But you won't get more FPS because of water cooling. AIO watercooling seems like very bad idea. Sure that Kraken G10 should cool down VRM, but it many cases it just won't do that.

Talking from experiences here ... AIO water cooling on GPU is just not worth it, and in many cases it won't work unless you will do some custom cooling from VRM. So custom heatsink that will cover all PCB parts, and some fans to blow at it.

IMO, AIO is wort idea for GPU cooling.

the Pascal cards don't seem to respond well to watercooling regarding the maximum achievable overclock, just get a decent aftermarket cooled like Gigabyte Windforce or the likes

I have a FE 1070 and a NZXT G10 and X41 setup on the way that I'd planned on installing and seeing if they made a difference.

 

Worst case I pop the oem cooler back on and call it a day.

I would advise against it. The 1070 already runs pretty cool and the overclock threshold doesn't seem to be a problem of temperature. It seems to get decent increase in overclock just on air, so the extra 50-100$ you spend on watercooling the card won't warrant the >5% you can maybe juice out.

 

That is, unless you are building in a very tight small form factor case and need to dissipate the heat efficiently.

Could you let me know how it goes? I'm currently in my final exams anyway so I'm not going shopping for another 2 weeks anyway.

It actually might help. Pascal no not this time but Maxwell performed much better when kept cool.

Sure thing.  I think everything gets here Wednesday so I'll probably put it all together towards the end of the week.  I'll bench it a bit if I can with stock cooler before swapping it.
