Overclocked 980 vs 980Ti vs 1080 = Potential is there, but not with FE

Arct1c0n

More reason to skip Nvidia's horrific priced FE and wait for custom boards with extra power. My Kingpin 980Ti will hold me off until the 1080 Ti comes to play

If I had a 980ti I would also not upgrade to a 1080.
IMO, I'd only upgrade at say what I do have, a 970, and below.
But that's also only true if you wanted to move from 1080p to 2/4k.

[CPU: 4.7ghz I5 6600k] [MBAsus Z170 Pro G] [RAM: G.Skill 2400 16GB(2x8)]

[GPU: MSI Twin Frozr GTX 970] [PSU: XFX Pro 850W] [Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo]
[Storage: 500GB WD HDD / 128GB SanDisk SSD ] [Case: DeepCool Tessaract]

[Keyboard: AZIO MGK1] [Mouse: Logitech G303] [Monitor: 2 x Acer 23" 1080p IPS]

Purchased myself a 980ti a week ago. Returned it, as I literally heard about the 1080 reveal a day later. Might as well wait a little bit extra :)

Yeah, I made the moronic decision to sell my MS 980Ti two weeks ago due to the hype and before prices went down, then I learned the truth and I am so mad at myself.

I have a used Kingpin 980ti and a new 980 TI hybrid coming and I will keep the best one and happily game until next year when the 1080 TI is in full force hopefully

The 1080Ti is gonna be hot as balls.

Yeah I was thinking about that, hopefully the 1080ti won't be too horribly over priced and will game well at 3440*1440p which is what I want to play at, if it is i'm guessing I could find a 980ti that would do just fine

I came from an AMD 7600 series, which is now currently in my new desktop, being way to tiny for the large case.

Wait , the 1080 got a 11% OC ? As a max overclock ? Damn , my 290x can take a 25% overclock if i push the voltage . Consider me unimpressed.

Only reason to get a 1080 is you absolutely have to have the latest graphics card.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I believe that the new pascal architecture doesn't handle over voltage that well. And with that comes the lesser need for water cooling as well.

See, one thing I don't like about GPU Boost is that it takes the control away from the overclocker. At least with 3.0 we can tell the card to deliver a specific clockspeed at each voltage step, but I'd like the option to disable it without voiding warranty.

I'm saying it lessers the need for water cooling. Water cooling will (nearly) always triumph over air cooling, however, it is less prevalent on pascal than on maxwell.

Again, as everyone has been finding out, the FE is very power and thermally limiting on the core.

Well, I think its much more that FE cooler just can't handle the heat load, look at the fan speeds vs temps. A higher grade dual/triple fan will be much better from third party AiBs

But then, you are power limited after that with only 1 8pin as found here. In short, the FE design is crap for overclocking.

I'm really looking forward to a dual 8 pin 1080 with a better cooler. That thing will boost like crazy

Have to say my Hybrid with a reference PCB has been more stable than all my friends who have custom. And it overclocks with way less voltage.
