Hello Guys at the Forum,

so i need some help with my new rig that i will build soon. My general plan is to build my pc with one gpu first and then buy a second one later on....

So i choosed the gtx 970 over the r9 390 for several reasons. Mostly because of the hilarious power consumption and heat output of the r9 390 and the better driver support on the nvidia side.

But i do not know if a core i5 6500 is enough for those sli 970s at all.

The 6600k would fit all the way but it is more expensive with the aftermarket cpu cooler i have to buy too.

So do u think that this works?

BTW 1080p gaming only! so far....

the i5 6500 would bottleneck the 2 gtx 970's, personally i would get the 6600k and a 980 ti, but that probably isn't practical… Even if it isn't I would definitely wait until you could afford it.

So a i5 6600k and the sli setup would be fine? Would a i5 4690k work too?? Saw some impressive vids on youtube...

Thank you

If you're gaming, get a 6600k and wait a few paychecks for a 980ti. or wait for the GTX 1070 or whatever, when it comes out.

I would wait but the new cards will come Q3/Q4 in this year and i do not have a PC at the moment so no games :(. i saw some great sli performance with the 970s tho

Thanks

Yeah but i want to be on the save side the next 3-4 years. I think the 6600k is best suitable...

Just realised, my friend has a 4690k and 970 SLI and it does very well but there is a slight CPU bottleneck. It would probably go away if he over clocked but no matter how much I try to persuade him to buy a 212 evo and OC he won't ... So if you plan to OC the 6600k then the bottleneck will go away. I would look at 2 970's vs 980 in benchmarks though

Buy a used 290X, even a 280X for 1080p. Half the price of a new 970. This is coming from someone who sold his 970 SLI's and bought a used 290X 8GB (nearly impossible to find). At 1080 the 4 vs. 8GB is a moot point unless you plan on using DSR, I play at 1440p and the 970's just couldn't handle some games with HD texture packs.

970 just isn't good value for money at $330+ USD, regardless of power consumption.  At this point whatever you buy will likely be replaced by the end of the year, so why waste more money than necessary?
