onboard sound issue

Lays

I helped my friend put a system list together+buy all the parts+assemble it, and his "skullcandy mixmaster" headset/headphones, anyways it has a built in mic with a mic+headphone combo plug-in and his PC won't detect it.

mobo: msi gaming gd45 z87

Anyways is there anything he can do to get them to be detected? he's all raging at me because his laptop picks them up and his new 1500$ build doesn't and hes all mad because he spent 300$ on skullcandies even though they're worthless anyways lol

maybe the headset it bad or there is a short in the wires. try reinstalling any audio drivers and made sure the audio inputs are not disabled by right clicking the speaker icon in the taskbar and hitting recording devices then made sure everything is enabled.

@WoodenMarker

yeah I had him install all the realtek audio stuff+ soundblaster cinema via the links on msi's downloads for the board, when he plugs it in it recognizes it as headphones/mic but it doesnt work for the mic part, or mic+headphones at the same time.

It only works as headphones :q. I read somewhere online some things just dont pick up the fact that its a dual plug, but he apparently doesn't understand that since he's blinded by the amount of $ he spent lol

I told him to go buy a horrible 10$ headset at walmart, and save up for 30 days, return the headset and buy real headphones+ a mic or a sennheiser headset or something along those lines.

LoL skullcandy.

Pretty sure the onboard soundcard doesn't work for combo jacks. You may need to get a soundcard that does or get a new headset/headphones

Off to the Audio section for some recommendations?

LoL skullcandy

he thinks theyre good just cuz he spent 300$ on em :/

@WoodenMarker I'll probably tell him to get audio technica ath-ad700's and a decent mic or something, that way he doesnt have to spend very much and he wont complain LOL

throughout the entire time I was helping him build his pc via webcam, he kept questioning EVERYTHING I told him to do, he couldnt get his PSU in at first, then his front panel connectors "didnt reach"

And I'm sitting here saying, "it's an atx case and an atx motherboard, they WOULD NOT SELL IT IF IT DIDN'T WORK"

30mins later he figures it out after arguing with me for ages... :/

It can be frustrating the first few times. Good on you for sticking with him. :)

When I first bought my pc the guy's at fry's helped me build it in the store, but I didn't get to do any of the more expensive parts IE: putting mobo/cpu in etc because they said they'd give me a warranty if they could do the majority of it.

But when I upgraded cases I had to do it all myself for the first time, and it actually was pretty easy and I cable managed 5x better than the guy's in the store lol :D I think maybe it just has to do with knowing what youre up against, I should of had him watch more videos before he put everything together, just to prep him some-more

Did you slap him for paying that much money for what is equivalent to astro A30's in terms of sound quality?

Astro's aren't actually all that bad, I had the a50's before my audio technica ath-ad900x, and they weren't all that far behind in terms of quality at lower sound, but the louder sounds are 5000x better with the audio technica's

But yeah anything like that that's aimed at the masses usually blows :/

The A40's are great for gaming but if you like music and everything else get some monitors, my A50's where $70, A30's where $30, and my HD555's where at list price but so worth it.

I also have ATH-M30's and M50's and those are some the best for the price.

Yeah I think I'll try to talk him into getting something else, I've gotta figure out how to explain to him how gaming headsets/headphones suck compared to actual Audio-Phile quality headphones

ATH-M30's are good for gaming and music, and their price is almost unmatched.
