Put the 290 in a liquid cooler maybe?

How much airlfow is the card getting and do you have a custom fan profile? The reference 290 will keep the fan low until the GPU gets to 90 C and then will adjust the fan to keep the temp 90-92 C

Where do you already have fans? @Hybrid_

1 Intake at the front, 1 exhaust at the back, and 1 exhaust above the CPU cooler.

I'd either try moving the top exhaust to the bottom as an intake just to test if the temps get better and don't screw over the cpu temps, also positive pressure is better for both cooling and dust management @Hybrid_

And if that doesn't work better fans/airflow case are in probably required

Also I just realized to ask this, which way is your psu blowing, as  it appears to go in the front

I own an MSI 290 Gaming LE (TwinFrozr) and it gets quite hot in my Fractal R5. I hit 92C while gaming. I am planning to add an extra fan on the bottom (near the PSU) to blow some cool air directly on the card. I am also thinking about changing the thermal paste to something like MX-4. I think the thermal paste used by MSI isn't very good. I have the card since 10 months and it is definitively warmer than it used to be, for the exact same game. I used to be around 83-85C.

I had an MSI aftermarker cooler R9 290 and it ran at 95c all day long loud as hell, even changed thermal paste made no difference, Decided to go ham and got a 980 Ti, best decision ever, pc is quiet as a mouse under load and idle!

edit: I added a bottom intake to feed the card some cool air but still made no difference

The same reason XFX had 4 revisions - they couldn't sort out their VRMs

Even Sapphire made a revision of the Vapor-X cooler adding a 3rd fan to it.

Revision 0 cards from Asus, on the other hand, are beyond anything you've heard or experienced - let me just say - melting VRMs. :P

That's an Urban Legend started by the reference cooler - the Sapphire Vapor-X 290X doesn't break 70*C with Crysis 3

It's just a better designed cooler - Asus can't make a good AMD card to save their lives - they just copy-paste Nvidia coolers on top of AMD cards and expect miracles.

There is a reason the Vapor-X cooler are regarded as the best GPU coolers around :)
