Does Memory Speed Effect Minimum Fps? This Thread Holds The Answers

Going to be posting up a ton of benchmarks over the next few days with different speeds of memory. I will even disable cores to show the effects of faster memory on quad and dual cores. 

 

5820K @ 4.6Ghz

GTX 980 Classified @ Stock Clocks - 1430BC, 7010Mem

 

Valley is reading core wrong. Is not at 1557 BC. I had planned on using a max overclocked 980 but it might have effected the results if it downclocked due to heat.

It appeared to me that RAM speed has the biggest impact when a game is being limited by the CPU, but hard to tell since I can't find a source that's benched it extensively... rarely more than 1 or 2 tests.

What scalability are you using? Up to DDR3 2400Mhz?

My guess here is that you'll see maybe a 1-2 FPS difference when changing memory speed and the real performance hit will come from reducing the number of CPU cores.

Then again, Linus tested this a while ago with fast DDR3 and not with ultrafast DDR4.

IMO - The difference margin will be the biggest between 1333Mhz and 1600Mhz compared to ANY other speed change.

DDR4 isn't much faster than DDR3. You can get 2800MHz DDR3 for the price of DDR4, and with tighter timings.

Wrong. I've tested this in the past,... (True that I cannot say it for modern CPU's and such, but I did it in DDR3 infancy)

1333Mhz vs any other speed has a noticeable difference in varied games. (Noticeable being said loosely, a few fps, but a difference nonetheless,...compared to any other speed)

Not all games, but some, test it yourself.
