1080p or higher?

BITW_NeXuS

So I have a 780Ti in my newly built PC but I don't have a good display to compliment it. I have a Samsung 20 inch monitor with the max. resolution being 1600x900. Now that I have enough money(after I went broke when buying the GPU) I am looking to buy a new display. So should I go with a 1080p monitor or a higher resolution like 2K?

Also please let me know what displays should I be looking at. Thanks! :lol:

Maths~

1080p   =   2,073,600px or 1440^2

1440p   =   3,686,400px or 1920^2

4k      =   8,294,400px or 2880^2

In short, I think 1440p is worth it for any monitor, but 4k really is not going to come into its own until you have a 30+inch screen.....

Definitely this^. More models with 1440p 120/144Hz, probably G-Sync ready too, will start to pop out soon and are probably worth the waiting.

If you must buy a monitor, I would say get a cheap but good 1080p monitor for now and save money for the upcoming 1440p 120/144hz monitors that will come out at a reasonable price next year. So then you'll have a two-monitor setup that is pretty neat where you play in one monitor and can still see your desktop, stream, web browser, etc on the other monitor.

You won't be able to run games at Ultra and 4K with one 780Ti I believe so I would discard that.

Im at 1080p at it looks fine to me. I saw some 1440p monitors and the image looks really nice, but I couldn't justify replacing my 1080p monitor for a 1440p.

So since you don't have a 1080 monitor, then go for a 1440p.

240Hz PWM flickering backlight, 800:1 contrast ratio, 1 frame input lag... come on, there's better options today for that price. Disregarding the Korean panels (unless you like to gamble), the bl2710pt from benq is the best option right now if you're in North America.

Also, there's no competition for the asus 1440p 144hz monitor and I highly doubt that's going to change anytime soon. The prices won't drop for a very long time.

They'll drop soon, there are many Gsync monitors coming out in the near future. PB278Q is a widely recommended monitor, why don't you like it? :)

I am more than happy with 1080.  What I would have to spend to improve on that would arguable not always be beneficial.  In other words the money might be better spent on headphones, new mouse/keyboard or hard drive etc.

More 1080p g-sync monitors, yes. I haven't heard anything about 1440p g-sync panels. Personally, I don't mind the pb278q. However, the monitor uses pwm dimming which causes headaches for some people. In Europe, they don't even sell this panel anymore. It's been replaced by the PB278QR.

I'm in Europe too! :) Most of them are 1080p but there is a 4K Gsync monitor from Acer IIRC. With all the hype for 4K, I think it's going to affect the price points. I agree though, Swift is still the one and only when it comes to 1440p 144Hz w/gsync. I've never heard about the PWM dimming, read the reviews about the monitor and liked it. Thanks for the heads up though. This should be known by the community. Maybe you can post a thread about this or something. :)

eLucid, I'm not sure why you dislike the ASUS PB278Q monitor so much. It's a widely recommended and popular monitor.

On a different note, there is a cheaper model to the BenQ BL2710PT if you can't afford it BITW_NeXuS. It's the BenQ GW2765HT.
