Safe anti static environment.

BloodWithIce

So I have a wrist wrap, but it always gets in the way.
Can I use powder free latex gloves instead?
Will it be safe?
Thanks

don't use anything? you're not a walking bolt of static.

I never have and never will use an antistatic band.

edit: and I even sometimes work on my bed.

That's how you zap components

been doing it for years, The reason anti static bands are used in motherboard factories etc. is because they deal with LOADS of motherboards and if one is to fry without an antistatic band on you are liable for the cost. for an everyday consumer the chances are very very slim to zap a component, especially if you just touch something metal before starting with what you're doing (so basically just touch the case before touching components, it's not that hard)

Edit: also I would not use gloves. you may not zap something, but your feeling is reduced and you could bend a pin without realizing it.

i built my first pc about a month ago and i just worked on wood flooring and built it on a wooden table, without using any anti-static wrist band. I just touched the case regularly to discharge myself.

Latex gloves are just like balloons, you can easily create a static-charged environment with them.

Linus says to put the anti-static band on your ankle.

I have built computers for 18years. I have never worn a strap nor zapped a component. Touch the case every so often and you are good to go just no socks and carpet..

how many computers does that equal and how many DOA's have you had?

if i had to guess, 150-200 but didnt keep track of how many I did when working at a computer shop, I have had DOA parts, that does happen from time to time. Though in recent years not as much

How do you know they were DOA and didn't die from static during first install?

Wrist straps are a waste of money. People get way to scared about static electricity. Computer parts are not nearly as easily hurt by electro static. My advice to you is to sit in your kitchen not on carpet and build your PC don't worry about static just touch your case every time before you touch your cpu, MB, or ram. Everything else can not be hurt by static.

Or you could get a ESD mat they are conductive mats that are earthed that way anything that touches them is grounded, but personally I wouldn't bother with ESD if your not a comercial PC builder.

or you could try and work out how many DOAs are actually DOA and not killed with static on first install.  My anti-static strap cost $5,  not nearly a waste of time when you consider simply having to return a product costs more than that in time, fuel, postage etc. Not  too mention how much of a pain it is.

IMO it's a small price to pay for insurance.

You might as well just go rub your feet on carpet then and build your computer on your bed afterwards lol.

Static kills components easy, you may not even feel it when you touch a part.

Always work on a non-conductive work place, be static free with a wrist band, or by continually touching metal.

You may be luck yourself if you do not live in a very dry environment.

Just install your PSU first and plug it in, but not powered on. It will ground your entire case and yourself when you are touching the case.
