Build Log Data Server 'Baldur'

Ahnzh

as a 'smaller' update i wanted to show the pcb boards that I'm using for the drive cages. I received them some time ago but never published the pictures.

These are really interesting to me, when you install and configure them, are you able to go into quite some detail? or if you have any documentation or publishing on the web of them being used link me in? i'm not sure what to look for...

actually they aren't that special. The only thing they do is capture the activity signal from the SATA/SAS power plug and amplify it so that you can plug in LEDs. I looked quite a long time till i found a PCB that's got pins for the output. Except that, the SATA/SAS and power is looped through. It's as if you plug in a cable directly into the HDD but since I wanted to integrate HDD tray caddies in order to be able to fast swap drives. Due to locational limitations it would be hard to exchange drives else.

I kept on calculating a lot of stuff lately. With traditional server drive bays i would run into problems pretty fast because of the 210mm server width. Today I ordered 2 of these drive bays to figure out if this will work:

Maybe I have to fix the drive orientation from vertical to horizontal because of this

I've got my CAT7 network cables for quite a while now. (CAT7 cables with CAT6a plugs, there are no CAT7 RJ45 based connectors since it's impossible for now to shield the pins. They are too close to each other for higher frequencies.

For now here are the pics

For CAT7 connectors there are 2 versions and we have to wait in order to see which one will be used in the future.

TERA-Connector:

Nexans GigaGate 45 Connector:

890x.jpg

As you can see both designs focus on having a larger space between the cable pairs. The TERA connector has got a different footprint from the 8P8C (RJ45) connectors and allows for up to 1000MHz, the GG45 Connector allows up to 5GHz. In addition to that, since the GG45 connector has got the same footprint as the 8P8C connector and just removes the middle connector pairs at the bottom side of the connector and moves it up to the top side, this allows backward compatibility to current RJ45 based technology. If I am allowed to make a guess, I would say the GG45 connector will be the future but since it seems that 10GBase-T will be able to run over CAT6a this is going to be far into the future.

Does anybody have some further information?

/edit: I forgot to add, the cables I got are rated for 900MHz and I tested them for up to 50m of 10GBE connections. They work flawless, I'm amazed! I expected a max length of 10 meters without problems but it seems that far more than that is possible.

Hi, could you please post from where are you getting these ?

Edit: never mind i have found them if anyone is interested check this out http://pactech-inc.com/html/pcba-backplanes.htm

@2sysel2 I imported them to Europe. Taxes were high though. I got some in spare (26) so if you need some, just PM me

Could you please post the dimmensions of those backplanes ? i'm thinking about adding backplanes to my bitfenix prodigy but i'm not sure they will fit right (especialy the offset of the holes), I'm from Czech repoblic and I might be interested in buying few.but I'm not sure (I was checking out the RH-SATA-02C and I'm not sure wh this one has 2 sata ports)

EDIT: haven't you come across any backplanes without LED's and with sata power ? i'm not really sure if the molex connecter will fit in the prodigy)

@2sysel2 you can calculate the size of a standard 3.5 inch drive. They are larger than the drive by half a mm at most. The one with 2 SATA plugs is the SAS version, it's got SAS in its name. To begin with the difference between SATA and SAS, there are just a few...

And you can use SATA drives with the SAS backplane. I did not test it until now but I will during the next week. I want to have a pin out for an activity LED so the SATA version wasn't enough. Based on the cables: SAS and SATA are identical. Of course you cannot plug in 2 SATA cables, failover connections are a SAS feature. Especially Molex Power plugs and SATA/SAS are essentially the same.

Instead of a single ground, 12V, 5V and 3.3V connector you have 3 in parallel allignment. Pin 11(activity) and 12+10 (ground) are additional and only of use if you want a visual activity output (LED).
