Friends PC (hackintosh)

Tea1337

So my friend is looking to get a cheap intel system with an i3 and 16gb's of ram with a GTX 660? I told him to wait to be able to ask you guys about what he should buy! Since I am busy and not very good at super low end hackintosh systems, I thought i'd ask you peeps. So his needs are basic, it's for programming in Visual Studio and playing minecraft, that is 100% all he is going to do with it, no demanding games or anything. His price limit is $675 including a 1080p monitor, and he already has a 512gb ssd and a 2tb WD ready to be used. All peripherals are already bought and all he needs is the computer hardware.

Extra information: I was talking with him and he NEEDS 16gb's of ram since some programming tasks use quite a bit of ram, and he only needs a dual core as long as it has hyperthreading.

I think the only Intel that has Hyper Threading is an i7-4770k. basically half of his budget.

My mom wants a Mac. So some day, I will undoubtedly build a Hackintosh. Something like what your friend wants, less ram though.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Not true.

I think one of the i3s does

I know that 4670k + do.

What kind of dollars are you using?

All of the mainstream desktop i3's do. There are also xeons, everything on the lga 2011 socket, mobile i3/5/7's, etc.

I stand corrected, the i3's do have hyper-threading.  The i5-4670k does not.

You sure? I was positive it did? However now that I think of it my co worker has a 4670k and he hasn't said anything about hyper threading.

The 4670k does not have hyperthreading. Refer to the Intel spec sheet for more info http://ark.intel.com/products/75048/intel-core-i5-4670k-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3_80-ghz

Mmmmk. I would've, but I'm on mobile and switching stuff around, etc is annoying. I think the reason I thought it had it was because I associated it with the 4770k, which does have hyper threading.

Also, 500 posts :)

No problem.  Alternatively, if he is more concerned with CPU power and performance RAM than GPU power, this build will work:

This will be his best overall build coming in slightly over budget:

I'm probs going to change it pretty often.

When do you get more then 3 lines in your sig?

I believe 3 lines is the max. Plus, you don't want a whole novel as your member title. :P
