If you're framelocked does a CPU bottleneck really matter all that much?

WillOfTheLand

I'm just curious, if you're playing a game that's framelocked at 60fps (or 30) is there really a worry of the CPU being bottlenecked if a GPU is more than a match for it? I know I've seen cases where a friend saw hitching playing a game at 100+ fps at 1080p but it went smooth when upping the resolution to 1440p, but I'm wondering if that could also have been solved by simply framelocking the game at 60fps, since he only had a 60hrtz monitor at the time anyway.

It depends on the game, because the frame rate is often not the only source of a bottleneck, but if it is the main contributor, frame limiting can indeed help.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

if he's limited by CPU (CPU threads pinned at high usage), then he could be experiencing frame pacing issues, especially if his CPU has little threads compared to options today.

limiting FPS does alleviate cpu usage

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

framelocking to 60fps with 1080p would be smoother than going to 1440p to do it.

Some games deal very well with 100% cpu usage and frame locking wouldn't help them. The game must of been bad at scheduling with 100% usage.

I would certainly raise the res though.
