Why are pc and phone calculators installed by default are so basic? It is not that hard to cram more complex features in software calculators like, lots more advanced scientific functions and visually perfect algebraic method (V.P.A.M.) screens.

Dunno what calculators you're talking about, but both my OS and phone calculator are scientific calculators...

  1. Most haven't changed much since v1 of whatever OS they're in, and are only maintained for calculation bugs and UI updates.
  2. It's costs money to develop them, and Microsoft/Apple/Google/whoever don't get paid to provide fancy calculators, that's what they have third-party apps/software for (whose developers pay money for OS/app store support on top of it)
  3. The average computer user doesn't need to casually integrate a bell curve or what have you. 2 + 2 = 4 will suffice.

Because most people don't need those features in their preloaded calculator, and if you do need them they're easy to find elsewhere.

-solves integration of sin^2 x + cos(sin x) by pen and paper-

also engineering students:

-uses calculator to do 7+8 just to be sure-

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

It just would be nice for the developers to add these features though, especially for visually perfect algebraic method displays would be a nice to have.

The calculator of OS bundle is at same level with Paint and other basic software. It is there because all users might need something like that at some point. If I like to do more stuff like that, I can invest time and effort to search something specifically developed for it.

 

That's why there's store to install from. Or actual software, like Matlab and Octave (which has online version too).
