HP Prodesk 400 not booting after RAM upgrade

Hi,

I am installing RAM into a hp prodesk 400 g2 mt, currently it has a single stick of DDR3 4gb. Purchased an identical stick off eBay which did not boot when installed. I also tested the new stick on its own in the system and still did not work.

System booted when the original stick was put back in. So I presumed the new stick was faulty.

Then I found 4 x 4gb DDR3 G.Skill which I also put into the tower. As it only has 2 slots I first tested 2 of the g skill sticks and then each individually, the system still did not boot. It would suggest the issues are not with the ram sticks and slots.

Motherbord is ms-7860 ver 1.2.

On the attached photos, the original working RAM is the one in the middle, not on the bag.

Had a quick look in the bios, hardly any options other than changing the boot order.

I would appreciate any advice.

you can't just install any memory in OEM machines. some of them only take specific ram so it would explain why the GSkill kit doesn't work.

what is strange is that the identical ram doesn't boot either. what cpu is in this computer?

It should boot on the identical modules, probably the memory is faulty.

Or the bios only permits particular modules by it's serial code.

Wait so do I understand this correctly.

It doesn't boot even after using the old dimms? If so, clear the cmos and try with one stick at a time.

You could also try every dimm on the board and try the new sticks in a different system if possible.

It works with the original stick. So far it does not work with any other stick, including an identical stick brought second hand from eBay.

Well that eBay stick could be DOA and as for the gskill one.

Some OEM's can't work with certain sticks sadly.

Only way to check if it's DOA or not is to use it in a different system.

I have found an old dell system to test the stick and it works. that dell system also has the same type of ram, 3 sticks now in total. The original one, one from ebay and one from the dell.

I have taken the cmos battery out for awhile with the power cable unplugged and no difference. if anything I have made it worse as the system will not boot with the original stick. I am out of ideas. unless the motherboard was on its way out.
