Can't decide: 31,5' monitor 1440p vs 1080p

PloufsPuppet

Hi,

I can't decide. Actually I have my old computer and also a new computer that will rechange the old computer. The old computer runs with a 27' full hd from samsung, which runs fine but has only 60hz. Spechs from old pc: xeon 4x 3,4ghz + 1070 gtx + 16gb ram. For the new computer with the following specs I want to switch to a new monitor:

i9 9900k @Stock+MCE Asus optimized || MSI GeForce RTX 2070S Gaming X Trio || G-Skill RipJaws Kit 32GB DDR4-3200 || BeQuiet 750W Straight Power E11 || Fractal Design Define R6 PCGH Solid-Edition || Win 10

Now I purchased this monitor:

https://www.cyberport.de/pc-und-zubehoer/monitore/msi/pdp/6117-00n/msi-optix-mag322cr-80cm-31-5-fhd-gaming-hdmi-dp-usb-c-freesync-180hz-1ms.html

I am satisfied with colors and picturess and ingame it look good to i guess. However windows itself could look better too. Now I think to get this instead:

https://www.cyberport.de/pc-und-zubehoer/monitore/msi/pdp/6117-00m/msi-optix-mag322cqr-80cm-31-5-wqhd-gaming-hdmi-dp-usb-c-freesync-165hz-1ms.html

But I have some thingss, that make me worry:

- Will the monitor work fine in games even in 5 years? I dont upgrade often, mostly after 5 years. The gpu might get a switch after 1-2 years. I also want sometimes to play latest games in very high quality. Right now i actually play CoD MW, Borderlands 3 or soon Resident Evil 3. Cyberpunk will follow too.

- How does videofiles in 1080p or 720p look on the monitor compared from the 1080p monitor vs 1440p monitor. Since its not native, I guess it could look worse.

- Will the picture really look better?

The dpi-informations I have:

27'FHD (like I have) has 82dpi

MSI Optix MAG322CR 31,5 FHD has 70dpi

MSI Optix MAG322CrR 31,5 WQHD has 93dpi

I really can't decide. mostly people say, WQHD is the must have right now. Also in the past I played with HD-Ready TV till 4 years ago, while everyone used a fhd monitor. But also most people now say WQHD is best for 27', while I want 31,5. Then the loosing fps compared to fhd. And also some games don't support FHD (Resident Evil Remastered or Command & Conquer Generals/Zero Hour).

I don't know :(

If you need such a huge display, absolutely go with 1440p. Even at 27", 1080p starts to have visible pixels. Your monitor will work for as long as you are satisfied with your image quality.

Nm, COD will run fine with that at 1440p

I will say that 32" is way too big for 1080p, it's definitely a 1440p size.  Tho I'd look into Ultrawides as well.

Absolutely, I feel an ultrawide would be a better investment here.

Well ultrawide is no option here because i dont have more space on the desk.

Also pls dont stack on cod mw.

its also about old games. Ultrawide is a problem here. And also games in future or movies is a point. Those are the important things!

Most movies are shot for 21:9 format and only a very limited number of older games don't support the ultrawide format (which can still be done with some mods) and the 21:9 support just keeps increasing, not going down. Get a cheap IKEA bigger desk and go for ultrawide.

I am torn with the 2070 Super being viable at Ultra 1440p for 5 years, just not sure if it will or won't be.

I am certain that 1440p is a must for a 32" monitor tho.  Plus, you're machine is at a level that you either go 1440p/100 or 1080p/165+.   It's really up to you how you want things to look and run.

Yeah 1440p for such size for sure. For playing shooters I wouldn't care for PPI though that's quite low PPI in general otherwise. For 30ish" I'd personally go for 4K though.

Ok to be clear: I don't want a ultrawide monitor or a new desk (i like the thing i have). Also not interested in 4k. It is just about the thing that i wrote: 31,5 fhd vs wqhd.

What is about movies/video-files? Is 1080p vs 1440p a difference of 60fps? then i would say, that 1080p is the choice here.

my monitor is in usage not only for gaming. actually gaming is just a small part of everything. I also watch tv with it with a receiver. Or watch movies that are from video-files.

I have a 31.5 inch 1080p display. Yes, you can see pixels from a normal distance but it's not bothering me. Watching movies is no issue with this resolution, but text and especially small icons are very pixely.
