Do I need an aftermarket cooler?

Hi all,

 

I'm planning to build a new PC pretty soon centered around an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. I was just checking the Amazon.ca listing when I noticed that it comes with the AMD Wraith Prism LED Cooler. I was originally planning to get a Noctua NH-D15 or a Corsair H100i Pro, but now it seems like that might not be necessary. 

 

Is it worth it to pay the extra money for an aftermarket cooler, or is the one AMD includes good enough? I'm not super into overclocking, so I don't plan to push the chip that much, other than a few tweaks.

Depends on your use. If you are overclocking get an aftermarket. If not and not doing CPU heavy workloads such as Video / Audio / Photo Editing then you're most likely okay with stock. Could always try it and if you end up seeing high temps in your daily use then buy one later. A pretty easy park to change after the fact

Thanks for the reply. I think i'll stick with it, because I'm not planning on overclocking. The only reason I was hesitant is because the folks over at r/AyyMD constantly rave about the stock cooler's performance, and I don't think I can really trust their judgement.

You dont need it but it's recommended if you can spend another $30-40 for one

I can see you are semi-casual user, stock cooler should be fine.

 

But in case you need quieter system, aftermarket cooler is the way to go.

AMD isn't going to sell you something that'll cost them more by frying your system. Just try it and if you don't like it upgrage

Try without for now, you may find your temps are high and you need a better cooler to get lower CPU temps. The stock cooler is decent but depending on use and case airflow these variables can negatively affect CPU temps. I had to use a big air cooler with my R7 1700, and now my R7 3800x (runs a lot hotter than the 3700x) but that is because of my use. No harm in trying with just the stock cooler!
