MSI tomahawk worth the premium?

Hello all,

 

I am in progress of building myself a new gaming PC with 3600 and RTX 2070S, with possibly light overclock. I was planning to use ASUS TUF B450-PRO GAMING because MSI was out of stock locally and people said it's a decend mobo.

 

However, now it seems MSI is back in stock so I want to ask: is MSI B450 Tomahawk really worth the 20% higher price? I am already over my initial budget.

And how about the other MSI boards like Mortar, or even A-pro max (which is actually cheaper than Asus)

The Asus seems to actually be a more expensive board than the Tomahawk, so if you can get the Asus Tuf Pro for cheaper go for it. If I'm not mistaken it also has better VRM cooling than the Tomahawk.

If you dont mind losing some features (MSI's site for each of these boards will tell you), it's totally fine to go for the Mortar and A Pro Max. Even the TUF Pro isn't bad by any means

My local prices are:

Asus TUF Pro - 100 eur

MSI A-pro - 98 eur

MSI Tomahawk - 120 eur

 

However, regarding cooling VRM etc, both MSI are a class above Asus on "tier list" .. not sure how much effect that has in real life for light OC.

MSI B450 Tomahawk, A-Pro and Gaming Plus are nearly identical apart from USB Type-C port and RGB support on Tomahawk abd D-SUB port on A-Pro. If you don't care about Type-C and RGB then go for A-Pro, ASUS TUF Pro has somewhat weaker VRM and although enough for R5 3600 i'd recommend MSI A-Pro. And if you can get MSI B450 Mortar for similar price it's actually better board because of second M.2 slot (otherwise it's, again, identical to other MSI boards mentioned above). Also if these MSI boards are -MAX they have 32MB ROM in contrast with all other B450 boards available, which might be useful if you ever decide to upgrade to Zen 3\4.

Take a look at MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX as well. I prefer MAX series boards, due to larger bios ROM size.

 

Btw, in my country, a week ago or so the X470 Gaming Plus MAX was virtually the same in price as the TomaB450.

 

From the A-pro, Gaming Plus, Tomahawk, or Mortar MAX, you can pick whichever you would like. All of these are very capable boards, with 3000-ryzen support out of the box.
