Overclocking stability and temperature issues with my 9900k, please help!

Okay guys, I'm having some issues with overclocking and system temps while stability testing etc and looking for some help please.

 

Specs:-

  • 9900k
  • Be Quiet! Silent Loop 360mm with 3 high speed Silent Wings 3's
  • Z390 Aorus Master (F10 Bios)
  • 32gb Gigabyte Aorus RGB ram 3200Mhz dual channel (whoops)
  • Gigabyte OC 1080ti
  • Seasonic Focus Gold 750w PSU
  • Phanteks P600s with Mesh panels with 4 140mm High Speed Silent Wings 3's

 

Temperature wise I'm having issues with my AIO when stressing it, even at stock speeds it will regularly hit 97c during Prime 95 Small FFT's within five minutes even with all fans running 100%. I know that the 9900k is a furnace but is this normal? Everyday usage at stock speeds is okay I guess, at the high 70's or Low 80's. Overclocked at 5Ghz on the the F9 bios and it was barely hanging on in the high 80's under load. I've reseated and re pasted numerous times. The pump seems to be running fine so I'm really not sure what's going on. Is it really just not quite enough for the 9900k?

 

Overclocking now I just can't seem to get stable and could really use some advice.

 

My settings are:-

  • Enhanced Multicore Performance - Disabled
  • CPU Clock Ratio - 50
  • AVX Offset - 0
  • Intel Turbo Boost Tech - On
  • Turbo Ratios - all @ 50
  • Hyper Threading Tech - Enabled
  • Speed Shift Tech - Disabled
  • CPU Vcore LLC - Turbo
  • CPU Vcore - 1.3

 

Okay so this will happily chew through several passes of Cinebench R20 with around a 600point increase over stock. However the moment I try to run P95 or something similar the system will instantly hard lock and BSOD. Web browsing etc will work fine but gaming will randomly BSOD. I'm really not sure what's going on as I've already increased the Vcore higher than on the previous bios. I'm a complete novice with this stuff so am wondering if there is something I've missed.

 

Can someone please help me get this figured out?

P95 is extremely taxing on your cpu so this is normal some people even call it a torture test. Maybe considering tweaking your avx offset as cinebench r20 I believe uses avx-512 and this is a taxing instruction set.

Thanks for the reply but Cinebench r20 runs no problem, and while p95 is designed to be extremely taxing I shouldn't be getting an instant hard lock and and bsod. Something just doesn't seem to be running right

Abnormally high in standard conditions, I dont know if you're in a hot room or the case airflow sucks. also don't know the actual received CPU Vcore during stress test (which should never be what you entered in the BIOS)

 

AVX offset helps the CPU run faster during non-AVX workloads as AVX workloads are extra taxing on Intel CPUs. Hot stuff will stay hot though

R20 is not a good stress test, you can have settings that pass it all day but crash when you start a game.

Sorry misread the post, maybe try adding a slight amount more voltage to see if it stabilises I know your struggling with temps but it might show you that the cpu just wants more voltage to hit that 5ghz figure

2nd: you have an absolute beast, there is n o reason at all to OC it.

1st: turn on Intel turbo boost

Your CPU will run at 5GHZ on all cores that easy.

Do nut mess with anything else, voltage ect.....

More like "are going on", since there are many factors to this

 

Not all 9900k can do 5GHz with coolable voltage in ambient conditions mind you

That's bound to run higher than needed voltage though making the thermal situation even worse...

+1, just set everything to auto with Multicore enhancement on and if your CPU is capable of it (only the KS is officially guaranteed to) you'll get an all core 5GHz that works. You going manual is the issue, that voltage is likely a bit low. MCE is likely going to set voltages a bit high, that you can reduce with an offset.

 

And yes to prime95, see it as a torture test but not a performance metric as it's not representative of anything you'll run in real life. It'll easily cause your CPU to draw 30% more power than anything realistic, with the associated extra heat.

Turbo boost is on, XMP is on.

 

While my PC is a beast I got a lot of these parts with the intention of having a go at overclocking. @Jurrunio Thanks but on the f9 Bios I was 5ghz stable

It didn't on mine!!!!

the opposite, it never went higher than 1.25v ish

MCE is guaranteed to just skyrocket voltages, so I wouldn't call that the optimal solution.

 

There could be many factors to why this is happening, ranging from your cooler being faulty to you just having gotten unlucky with your CPU. But since it jumps to 97C even at stock speeds, it leads me to believe that something's wrong with your cooler (especially since you mentioned that you have reseated/repasted), as even a single tower heatsink shouldn't let it go that high, at least definitely not within 5 minutes.

Can't you do less with manual voltage settings at the same frequency? OP's CPU is clearly worse in silicon lottery than yours. Of course you could also blame his AIO...

different BIOS updates can have different applied voltage with the same settings. You can monitor this with HWinfo64 in Windows, find the VR Vout reading. btw the voltage should go lower from idle to full load.

Enable MCE, enable XMP, and turn BCLK to 102.9....set AVX to -3...run torture test.  If that fails turn AVX lower a notch at a time till you get stability...

What? It's a K chip, you have every reason to OC it, only reasons not to would be if it's for a render machine or you don't have access to a decent cooler. Dialing in a decent core OC on these chips is braindead easy anyways.

 

No. MCE = too much voltage like @Jurrunio pointed out. Turbo Boost should be on from stock lmao, I've never seen a modern mobo ever ship with that setting off. Even my boards from 2009 have Turbo Boost on by default. 

XMP isn't magic, it's just a preset, factory OC for your RAM. It isn't somehow going to make the CPU temps better lol.

This is just fucking stupid. Messing with "voltage etc" is the entire point of OCing, you want the highest clocks possible with the lowest voltage, for the best performance vs temps.

Usually don't advise an AVX offset, since you're not actually stable at the core clock it says in a non-AVX workload if you need an offset. IIRC the stock all-core boost of the 9900K is 4.7Ghz, if you run a 300Mhz AVX offset on a 5Ghz core OC it's just reverting to stock boost under anything with AVX. Why not just tune for 4.7 at that point then, since you know that'll be stable in every load thrown at it? Chances are you can pull the voltages way down too for even better temps, and unless you're running refresh rates in excess of 144Hz you're not likely to notice a massive difference. Would also reccomend cache/uncore OCing at this point too, you can get similar scores with a lower core/higher uncore than just pure core speed alone. This has remained true since 2008/2009 with X58 and the original i7s.

It's fine if you don't OC, but then you shouldnt touch MCE either let alone when OP's having a thernal problem.

Yes, hardcore OCing is gonna keep you up till 2am rebooting 27 times to find the absolute max cap for your CPUs core and uncore then tweaking from there, then doing the same for your GPU all to get a 1% higher score in 3DMark TimeSpy than your friend. 

I'm not advocating everyone do that. Core OCing on a 9900K is a braindead activity - in other words it's extremely easy. You have one multiplier to care about and one voltage. You're not fucking with anything else if you just want a basic OC.

Same with the AVX offset, at an AVX offset of 300Mhz the CPU will run at 4.7Ghz under any AVX load (assuming 5Ghz core outside of AVX), meaning (IMO) you'd be better off just tweaking your voltage for 4.7 all core, since you can likely pull it much lower and get way better thermals.

In short, if MCE wasn't an OC, and was the same thing as XMP is, Intel would have stated on their 9900K spec sheet for example that it's rated for 5GHz all-core. Which they didn't.

Also, for someone that apparently doesn't really care for overclocking, that "5047.5MHz all core" you mentioned in your signature seems oddly specific lol

MCE is an OC, because it violates Intel's max multiplier per working core count specification, just like XMP beyond the max supported frequency for a certain DIMM count for the CPU and board. 

 

Besides no matter which way you do, voltage (or to be specific, minimum voltage it can dip to) needed to stabilize the same frequency never changes. If manual doesn't do well, MCE will do worse because it's more conservative with voltage.

So tried updating the bios to 11c as there was apparently a voltage fix from f10... now it doesn't hard lock it just instantly reboots lol

 

I didn't specifically need a fix, I just like to keep up to date with all my updates etc. I'm going to go back to F9 and see how I get on. Definitely need some more robust cooling, wondering if it's worth going push pull on the rad as I guess my next step is a custom loop which is going to get pricey.

You should go push pull just because you'll do that with the custom loop to get the most out of it already, you could always reuse the same fans.
