Common specs:

38"

3840x1600

Nano-IPS

98% DCI-P3 coverage

GL:

175Hz

HDR400

has G-Sync module

GN:

160Hz

HDR600

Gsync Compatible (no module)

GN should be cheaper as it lacks the FPGA Gsync module which is quite expensive.

I bought the LG 38GL950G and honestly if you can wait I'd grab the new one. It will more than likely be cheaper and have higher HDR (HDR 600 >400). Additionally the 175hz is somewhat of a gimmick due to the limited bandwidth that Display port 1.4 can currently handle not to mention hardware with AAA titles on max settings will ever consistently reach.

Basically you have to reduce your colors to chroma subsampling 4:2:2 to be able to reach 175 hz; however, you can run the monitor with full RGB @ 160 hz. WIth the new monitor maxing out at 160 hz it makes sense. You keep your amazing colors that this monitor is built for and at the same time have more than enough speed with the refresh rate with an added increase in peak brightness. Not to mention lose the Gsync module which will net the price lower. Its literally a no brainer and if I could go back I would grab the new model in a heartbeat.

Considering how long it took for the LG 38GL950G to come out I would say it is a good move. You can't wait forever.

I gave up on the LG 38GL950G and bought a 55" B9 OLED with my monitor money.

The LG 38WK95C-W with its 75hz refresh rate will do on my other gaming computer until more capable GPUs arrive.

The only games I play with HDR enabled are the last 2 Assassins Creed games.  To me they look the same with the LG 38WK95C-W as it does on my OLED so I am not unhappy.

I would not use Windows HDR for anything else for now since it is unwatchable compared to the OLED TV.

I have 2 Freesync monitors, 1 monitor with a G-sync module and the OLED TV that is G-sync certified.

With the Freesync monitors I use vsync because it does a better job.  If I used less than a 2080 ti I would be forced to use it.

My monitor with the module is perfect for keeping things smooth.

The G-sync certified OLED was a shock to me how good it is so I would go without the module if a monitor was certified by Nvidia.

If I had to choose between the two I would go with the LG 38GL950G. Going with the module is playing it safe and that is worth the extra money to me.

Fair enough. I’m definitely not discrediting your experience, but I can’t say I’ve experienced the same thing. I have both the LG 27GL850-B and the LG 38GL950G. I use the 850 as my secondary monitor; however I do use the monitor for games that aren’t optimized for ultrawide. When using it it’s just as responsive/snappy and smooth as the 950G. Thus the reason I recommended to save some money and get a brighter screen. I do agree that HDR isn’t really relevant atm, but you would be “future proofing” yourself if you have a mid range HDR gaming monitor. Previously, I used a CRG9. For games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Division 2 HDR really brings the game to life.
I will say I hope you are right as far as performance for the 950G in comparison to the new GN950G as I’ve already purchased the prior model.
