Looking to upgrade. Is it worth it?

Reijnen

Hey there, I’m currently thinking of upgrading my current GPU to an RTX 2070 or 2060. I’m currently running a GTX 980, i7 4790k, and 16 GB DDR3 1600Mhz.

I’ve tried finding some answers for myself but mostly all contradicting. So my question is would be is it worth while upgrading my gpu with those specs? Any advice would be awesome! Thanks in advance.

What resolution do you play games on? For 1080p that's not really a good upgrade. For 4k it's good but a new CPU as well would be better ;)

For the GPU, I would hold off till the 3000 series cards. Also the 5700 xt is within the specs of the 2070 and 2060 Super for the price so if you really wanted to get a new gpu look at AMD as well as it might be cheaper. Ray Tracing isn't useful right now so don't buy based on it.

1080p for the time being. I’m playing on 21:9 monitor and (surprising to me) I can run better frames on a 1440p monitor than my ultra wide, so I’m also considering getting a 1440 sometime as well.

Dude do yourself a favour and buy an RX 5700XT it beats the 2060, 2060S, 2070 and comes within about 5% of the 2070S which is just too expensive. So depending on your region get the Sapphire Nitro+ or PowerColor Red Devil or the Gigabyte model. And if you really need ray tracing Turing is just a gimmick in that respect and just wait for the next generation.

Here's my two cents and have fun upgrading! ;)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X | Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Formula | GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900XT | RAM: 2*16GB 3200MHz 14-14-14-34 G.Skill Trident Z Royal Silver | SSD: 2TB Gigabyte Aorus Gen 4; 500GB Samsung 860 EVO | CPU Cooler: Corsair H115i RGB Platinum | PSU: Corsair AX850 | Case: Corsair Crystal 680X | Monitor: Eve Spectrum 4K | Keyboard: Logitech G513 Romer-G Tactile | Mouse: Logitech G502 Lightspeed
