Got this for around 20 CAD, will it fry my system?

AeroMagnus

As you can see it's rated for 725W but says it won't go further than 658W and has no 80+ (so 500W max?) But it's a cooler master so at least has a brand. It was used as it has cigarette shit all over the insides.

Not sure what you mean here. Why would it only be able to output 500W if it doesn't have an 80+ rating?

Efficiency doesn't have anything to do with the output. The output rating (wattage) of a power supply is how much it can output, after efficiency loss. So a 700W power supply can provide 700W to the system. If it is 80% efficient it will be drawing 875W from the wall. 875W input times 80% efficiency = 700W output to the system.

So even if it doesn't have an 80+ rating it should still be able to output the rated power. It will just draw more power from the wall when doing so.

Cooler Master is a massive brand that has a huge range of products, ranging from absolute garbage to really good. The Cooler Master Extreme 2 was on the crappy budget end of that spectrum from 7 or 8 years ago. "w/o PFC" on the label is a dead give away that it's a crappy power supply. Active PFC is a minimum on any modern power supply.

Old, used, crappy power supply that is gunked up with cigarette smoke residue? Hell no. I would not use that.
Whoever sold you that power supply got a good deal for getting $20 for it. You unfortunately got the raw end.

What system are you trying to power and we might be able to recommend a power supply for you to use?

Do you have an existing power supply already, if so, what model?

oof thanks god I asked. Well, I was considering carrying it over the border but I'll throw it in the trash later.

My system is a shitty office dell running XP but I'm planning to get a 2600 and a 580 so I guess I'll need at least 650W? I really wouldn't like spending that mush on a psu although I know it's literally the part were I shouldn't cheap out on. I would like to hear recommendations. Also would you recommend using ebay to buy a psu?

A good 450W power supply will power a system with a Ryzen 2600 + RX 580 just fine. You're looking at less than 300W power draw from the system while under load in games and such. No need for 650W unit.

I wouldn't bother looking at used power supplies on ebay. Power supply is one of those things that you should buy new. RAM? GPU? CPU? Buy those used no worries. Not PSUs or HDDs.

Keep a look out on Newegg, amazon, microcenter, etc in the coming weeks because they will be having their Black Friday sales so you might be able to get a brand new power supply at a pretty good price. That might also be a good time to look at picking up a B450 motherboard, Ryzen 2600, the RX580, plus anything else you need for your new system. They often have CPU + Motherboard or CPU + Motherboard + RAM bundles as well where you can save an extra $30-$50 or sometimes more which practically pays for the new power supply.

Cooler Master MWE V2 are okay
Corsair CX450M would be a good cheap option
Corsair CX550 (not the CX450 since it only has 1 PCIe cable and some RX580s require 2) would be a better choice for a few extra bucks
Bitfenix Formula
The Rosewill Photon 550W on newegg has a pretty good sale at the moment bringing it down to $65.

Probably heaps more but those are just a couple of decent budget units I can think of off the top of my head.

this is the best I can probably get as my options are quite limited. Looking at the tier list this could be anywhere from B to C

Ah, you're buying in Mexico? I'm not entirely sure what prices are like there or what is available.

No need for a 750W power supply for the system you're planning on using. I'd recommend to see if there are any lower wattage versions available for cheaper. No point spending extra money on something that you can't use.

For example the CX550 would be a better choice for your needs than the CX750M, and it's a little cheaper.

80+ certifications are about efficiency, not total available power.

It means it's certified to be at least 80% efficient in power delivery. That means if you draw 600W of power from your system, the PSU will draw no more than 750W from the wall. The higher the efficiency, the less power is drawn from the wall.

I'd throw it in a non-primary rig. As long as it looks untampered with, Cooler Master isn't the worst brand of PSU, and I've used plenty of cheap used PSU's before. I wouldn't stress it near the max though.

For an older system that won't be stressed much, sure, go for it. But for any newer system with modern components, and especially if it's going to be stressed with high-loads like gaming, don't touch a unit like this. Spend the extra money and go with a much higher-quality unit.

While I realize this is an older post I am currently trying to repair one of these PSU's but one of the ceramic capacitors was damaged so I cannot read the value/rating. I was just wondering if you still had this PSU would be so kind as to take a pic of the inside of this PSU? I understand it might also be a lot of effort to pull a PSU out of a working PC so - no worries if your not willing. Also I know it might be a bit difficult to get an actual photo the side of the capacitor. Either way if you happen to be able to do this it's the ceramic capacitor that is located at the line in area next to the fuse on the PCB. Typically they are blue or brownish in color but I can't tell what color the one inside this PSU was as it has turned black from a transient voltage spike. If you can't take a photo then perhaps you could alternatively write down the numbers/letters written on it? It's about the size of a coin. Like these 4-1-480x480.png
