A kid asked me to build him a gaming PC for 450 usd

I am thinking about going with a AMD 1200 system that I will overclock, 16 GB of 3000 gskill agis ram. My question is what do you all think about a rx 580 or used gtx 970 with it? I can get the gtx 970 for like $50. And also what kind of bottlenecking would that CPU cause now and in the future? I've only used higher end AMD cpus so far so I'm kind of clueless.

My rig

Asus maximus z390

I9 9900k @ 5.2 Ghz 24/7 (5.4 Ghz benching)

Evga RTX 3090 ftx ultra

32GB Gskill trident z 3866 Mhz

1000 watt evga gold psu

All watercooled

Hell yeah go for it, that's an excellent deal.

Doesn't really matter if you're getting a superb deal on the GPU. And besides, the whole point of AM4 is having upgrade potential so when you do face a bottleneck, no need for a new motherboard. Just get the kid a properly outfitted board and he's set.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I think the R5 1400/1600 are only slightly cheaper so I'd take those CPUs instead.

GTX 970 for $50 sounds like a good deal so yes I'd grab that card and spend more money on the rest of the system

Yeah I was going to get a msi b450 gaming mini atx board. They are like $84

The ASRock B450m pro4 might be an even more economical choice. Personally if I was building it I'd go with this:

Yes pretty much. Except I was going to go with a higher watt psu, I dont know if 450 will power the 970 with an overclock on the r3 1200.

oh it definitely will, my i7 and titan pull 400 watts from the wall during a synthetic test, 250 to 300 when gaming.

Find an R5 1400/1500x.

That was the plan, but the 1200 is only around $60 compared to $130 for a 1400.

If you dig around, the 1400 is $80.

e-bay listing for one at $90, listed as new in box with cooler nevermind, bare CPU.

I would try to get a 1600. As Linus has said before, it's not 110 to 60, its 400 to 350 because you have to factor in the entire cost. 400 and 350 is a pretty minor difference, and the 1600 would be much better, especially for minimum FPS.

Didnt know that. I just built a 1600 system with a rx 580, it seemed to have power issues with a 500 watt psu, so I've been nervous about using too low of a psu since lol.

Often times wattage isn't the biggest part, it's quality. A 700w Raidmax unit would work much worse than a 450 watt Corsair CXM.

It was a evga 500 watt bronze psu. The issue I had with that is GPU would not hold a steady clock, and if I tried to increase the power limit it would just crash for no reason.

I have to throw a keyboard and mouse with it, I'm going to be right on the line of the budget.
