5.1 Headphones/Headset? or nah...

Recommended Posts

soo this has been asked alot before but im still confused.

as i understood 5.1 on headphones is mainly a software thing anyway. so the general consensus was that one should just get a good pair of cans and let the software do its magic.

BUT. i know theyre not audiophile grade by any means but i love my sony XB700 i have abused the shit out of them and never heared a single scratch or static or whatever youd call it. i had them kooed up to big amp and totally over done the volume but they were always just perfectly clear plus if you tune your equalizer that way they can really put out a punch .....

.....my point is i love them and consider them well built.

BUT. when i play games with them i wouldnt say that i could exaltly pin point the direction of the origin of the sound. its not really surround.

i have tested them now hooked directly into my mobo using asus's sonic something software. the test is supposed to simulate 5.1 but what i hear and what i see the on the radar dont match.

so basically im wondering if theres even still some sort of hardware component to making a pair of headphones more suitable for 5.1?

i really want that surround feel. should i get new cans? siberia 350 come to mind. got all kinds of certifications and seems to be open back design? yes? no? let me hear you thoughts and experiences

There are headphones that have a bigger Soundstage and therefore make it easier to give you that surround feeling. Example are the AD700X.

There's the Sennheiser GSX something something amp/dac that also simulates surround and is apparently very good at it. It's like $300 though.

You could get software to do that for you. Like Dolby at most for headphones. Hardware wise rhe Sennheiser fax dac amp exists. But there is no better audio upgrade headphone wise than just getting new headphones
