Using a I7-4790 not K in a New Build.

Hey Guys,

I want to start a new build but to save money use my old CPU. I have a 4790 and want to use something like a gtx 1060 or 1070. Would the 4790 bottleneck those cards at all? Would anything be a better pair with the 4790 or should am I best to just get a new CPU?

Thanks guys!

depend on the titles... for must game it wont be an issue, but going forward it might be.

Games such as BF1, BFV uses a lots of core ... depends on the kind of game you are playing.

That all depends on what drops in a few weeks from AMD. As of now B85 and H87 boards are priced alright, and DDR3 is also cheap, but maybe the 3000 series will be super affordable.

Overall, I think a used motherboard from eBay is not a bad move, but I also recommend waiting for new graphics cards from AMD as well.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

i dont think it would, i would totally reccomend Vega 64 but not above it so like 1080/2060 range (depends on games).

Nice old CPU, DDR3 ram and old haswell mobo isnt that pricy anyway.

4790 is a great CPU, you really shouldn't run into many issues.

Desktop: i9 11900k, 32GB DDR4, 4060 Ti 8GB 🙂

I run a Geforce GTX 1080 on a i7-4770 non-K, it's fine. I'm considering a Ryzen 3000 series CPU +ddr4 +X500 chipset MB, since Intel is behind now.

I'd however consider upgrading to something with DDR4, and I'd wait at least to see what the Ryzen 3000 series will cost, as at present the spectre/meltdown/mds bugs that plague Intel might not be fixed until they move to 7nm. Intel won't get there before 2023 for CPU's, and looks like they're trying to speed that up to 2021. Intel's still on the 14nm process from Broadwell with all their CPU's except Ice Lake (10nm, 10th generation Intel CPU's.)

I'D think about selling it.

It still gives you 200€ or more.

For that you can get a modern 6 Core with ease...

Depends on the game. Used mine with a few cards but it’s the k variant. Even at 4.8 it couldn’t keep up with a single 1080 at 1440 in a cpu intensive game. None of my cpus can keep up really.

But if you dont play those kind of game and don’t mine a frame cap, it could be just fine.
