Hard or soft mouse pads?

Wich one do you prefer and why? Also, don't soft mouse pads make friction between your mouse and the pad wich forces you to make harder movements? Isn't that annoying?

if my mouse weighed 10 pounds and the pad was made from velcro I suppose it would be annoying

Depends on the materials and surface texture, most hard mousepads tend to give a quicker snappier feel than cloth ones but this is all preference. I've always preferred hard mousepads for that reason as the cloth does have slightly more drag.

There are 3 type of mousepad.

1.Clothpad, your typical rollable clothpad.

2.Hardpad with cloth surface l, literally just a clothpad.

3.Hardpad with matte,glossy,solid surface. The real hardpad.

 

Optical mouse work well on cloth surface but it will have a difficulty tracking on glossy or transparent surface. Laser is the opposite.

 

It is also depends on the surface, there are 2 widely known surface type that is control and speed.

 

Control mousepad will have more friction allowing you to have more control over your movement hence the name. Speed is the opposite..your mouse will glide faster with it.

May sound ghetto-rigged, but the top of my desk has 3.5mm neoprene on it. It is from wet suits that are used for scuba diving. Just used adhesive spray on the desk top, and layed it down with a little stretch on top. Has nice give to it, 10x better than no mousepad. I like it because I did not want to have any issues of running out of room on the pad.

 

Got it off ebay, something like 1yd x 2yd 3.5mm material for about $30 shipped. You can get them in a variety of colors, mine is in RealTree camo for the added redneck effect. Just search for "neoprene fabric".

 

Bonus, you can cut it to any shape and use an iron on high to seal it.

I generally prefer "speed" cloth pads like the Cooler Master Swift RX i've been using for a long time, i also tried the Cougar Arena and i really liked that one as well.

Its much easier to roll the mouse around on that kind of pad, it also wears down the teflon feet on the mouse on a much slower rate in comparison with a hard pad or just using the mouse on the table.

I needed something very hard and sturdy because my cat used the cloth ones as personal scratcher. Razer Invicta may not be the cheapest one but so far I have nothing but good things to say about it.

I use and prefer hard pad. I like the less friction feel, sweat doesn't ruin it or make it feel inconsistent. I just feel more consistent with it. I play online fps games quite a bit, so there's that.
