Vega 56 Blower Cards

Djinnux

So 329 for an MSI blower style vega 56 on New Egg right now... is this type of cooler on a 56 going to result in a lot of poor performance??

Blower style coolers in general suck. The thermals will be within limits, but will be quite high (probably 80C+).

The card shouldn't thermal throttle or perform poorly, but it will run hot.

Well for the case I have it might not be all that bad.  Its a prebuilt HP that doesn't really have any good ability on its own to move hot air out.  Running an MSI RX570 Armor card right now I have to leave the side panel off or the whole system was running like crap so a blower for this particular computer might not be all that bad of a thing

Also because everyone has been telling me to upgrade from 4th gen i7 at the moment just isn't worth it I figured maybe this card would stretch out the life of that system a bit

In theory, yes.

 

I thought that by putting my blower style 970 in a HTPC case with 2 120mm intakes directed at the GPU would help with thermals. Long story short, it maybe lowered temps by a maximum of 5C on the GPU core. Same GPU in a mid-tower case with 1 intake 1 exhaust was getting 80C, in the HTPC case it gets 75C, but I did put thermal restrictions on it (no performance loss that I can tell).

I have a reference design Vega 56 and felt that it never offered its potential as AMD hardware in general start to back off turbo quite early with temperature. For normal use it doesn't really make a noticeable difference, other than it gets rather noisy. At least it is an air whoosh noise, not fan whine I suppose.

Haswell i7's (the high-end ones anyway) are still pretty decent, especially if you through an OC on them. My 4th gen i5 still holds up well in 1080p gaming....

If you don't want to replace the Heatsink with a Fullcover Waterblock, its a shit card - that isn't reduced to VEGA, that's directed at _EVERY_ Blower Card there is...

The reason is low airflow, high air resistance.

In short: They are hella loud - ALL of them, throughout the bank.

That is why there are After Market COolers, wich offer way higher airflow -> lower noise, better Cooling Performance...

 

The Money spent on a good Aftermarket Card is more than worth it!

Edit... Everyone has been telling me NOT to upgrade.  I don't have  a K sku CPU though its the 4770 non K so it turbos to like 3.8 or something I think maybe.  Its on an HP motherboard so I don't know.  3rd gen Ryzen might be a reason to upgrade not sure...

A 4770 non k is still decent. If you do upgrade soon, definitely go Ryzen 3000.

I guess im just wondering if I kind of "cap" my current system but upgrade it to a Vega 56 will I be able to maybe snag another year or two out of it before I feel like I need to upgrade.  FYI I will be replacing an 8gig RX 570 MSI armor card??
