Dell Precision 390 PSU upgrade

I recently got a dell precision 390 with a 375 Watt power supply, i want to upgrade to a 500 watt PSU, But iv'e recently found out that dell has pulled up some proprietary BS (unsurprisingly) on some of their computers by mixing around the 24 pin atx connectors on both the PSU and Motherboard,so that people have hard time looking for a replacement/upgrade,i know that a atx PSU will fit,i want to know that if i plug in standard PSU into the motherboard will it go up in flames?

You want to swap a PSU, on a PC with a core 2 duo?

No, it's a potato.

And no, if the graphics card you're putting in it, 375W isn't enough, you are VERY MUCH doing it wrong.

Had one myself

It's ATX compatible, so you decided to downgrade the PSU...?

:)

1.yes,i want to swap out the oem psu

2. i got rid of the core 2 duo and put in a core 2 extreme QX6700

3,the whole reason i want to swap it out power supply is so that i have enough power for my CPU and GPU.

You're likely going to downgrade the PSU (possibly quite significantly), and you're also likely to have plenty of power with the OEM PSU. That depends on the GPU you're planning to use.

im currently using a EVGA GTX 660, which needs 24 amp on th 12 volt rail, but the oem only supplies 18 amps on the 12 volt rail.

what exactly do you mean with "downgrade"

if the GTX 660 needs 24A on 12V, that would mean 288W, while the Spec says 140W:

WHere did you get the 24A?!

"Card powers up but is under powered"?

What do you mean by that?

If the PSU cannot provide enough power, it'll turn off or restart the PC.

If it doesn't, it's fine. And it will be fine, because a good 375W PSU is EASILY enough for a GTX 660. Look at reviews.

I ran a HD 7950 and FX 6300 off a (rather shitty) 380W PSU, and I can assure you, a top tier GPU and a (wannabe) 6 core CPU will draw more than your core2 quad and GTX 660.

I rather use that low wattage DELL PSU than waste money on a garbage, group regulated low quality PSU like the Thermaltake Smart SE you can see above...

If you replace it, look for something good. In Bronze you won't find much decent units though, most decent PSU are 80plus Gold certified.

Brands mean nothing. Brands have good shit and bad shit. EVGA has lots of shit, and decent shit too. So what model?
