Job and Laptop

I'm not sure if anyone has been in a situation like myself but if you have then I could really do with your advice/help. I recently applied for the Royal Air Force and passed all of my selection resulting in being offered a commission, I deferred this commission till after I finished University. I am now going on to study Computer Science a year later than I probably should have and have been job hunting for around 4 - 5 months. I am putting my CV out to everything and anything in order to get a job, from my preferred technology focused businesses to warehouse jobs. I am honestly in it for anything. 

 

I am needing a job so that I can fund a laptop for University and at the moment I have had two relatively good recommendations:

 

MacBook Air

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2

 

Now these are around the 1200-300 price point and well who am I kidding, beggars cannot be choosers. 

 

So I should probably get to the premise of my post and just say:

 

Has anyone else been in this position?

How can you effectively get the money or indeed a job to purchase the hardware you need?

Are my two laptop suggestions ideal for a Computer Science degree?

I would say no the macbook air is not sufficient as the hardware is going to show it's age faster and also it's overpriced comparatively to what it is. Computer Science is really broad so knowing what area would help. If it's just writing programs you don't need a ton of power and I would focus on battery life and portability then. In terms of paying for it. It's a tool as you will use it everyday and you are learning so you can justify spending money on it. If it's just for Netflix and taking notes then no. But you can't exactly run IntelliJ on a piece of paper

Later on I bought a Surface Pro, good laptop, but expensive and battery life is lower than the Dell, but the screen is better... You need to take care of it, unlike the Dell.

 

My thought, go second hand, Lenovo thinkPad or Dell Latitude 7000 or 5000 series. Easy to find on eBay and very very reliable.

You don't need these kind of fancy shmancy laptops that offer naught for their price but a fancy build. Buy a second hand laptop from ~2016 for a few hundred dollars. Besides, both can't be upgraded worth a damn. 

I once gave Luke and Linus pizza.

Both of those are the most anti consumer laptops on the market.

 

I used a crappy Lenovo flex 4 with a Pentium 4405u for over a year. It was pretty bad, my group would have to wait for my computer during group projects.

 

If I could do it over again I would either have bought a used thinkpad for a couple hundred bucks or used the computer lab to get me by.

When i was still learning there was the opportunity to get a good discount(as long as you currently go to a university or do an apprenticeship(germany) ) on laptops. I bought a powerful portable think pad that has served me well so far, and i paid 750 euro for a top spec model i7 16 gb ram 256 gb ssd. When i now think back i could have gone even cheaper i5 8 gb 256 GB ssd would have also been enough. When your just starting and don´t know which direction it will go maybe don´t look at the expensive very shiny nice ones. If you get for example a contract with some business it could be that they will offer you a laptop for work and your new shiny mac book air might stay at home as long as you work there because they don`t allow you to bring your own device into their network. I would suggest you to go  with something simple which will for the time and then see how it develops and what you specialize in.
