1080p, 144Hz or 1440p, 75Hz?

blue_mug97

So I'm thinking, with a GTX 1080, would it be better to get a 1440p 75Hz or a 1080p 144Hz display? I'm sure the 1080 could handle over 100 fps at 1440p in most games, but my remaining budget is not enough for a 1440p 144Hz (or 120Hz) monitor.

Any help greatly appreciated!

In case anyone is wondering, I was upgrading my system.

It now has the following specs:

- CPU: Ryzen 5 1600X (Cooler: BeQuiet! Pure Rock)

- GPU: Palit GTX 1080 Super JetStream, 8GB GDDR5

- MB: Gigabyte AB350 Gaming, Socket AM4

- RAM: Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8) DDR4 3200MHz

That sounds like something that would be subjective to you; I personally would go for the 144HZ as I am not big on eyecandy.

I mainly play Survival/Strategy/resource management games, like Anno 2070 and 2205 (plan on buying 1800), Just Cause 3 and 4, Subnautica (plan on buying Below Zero DLC), ARK: Survival Evolved, Astroneer... Those are my main concerns in terma of performance, since my previous graphics card was a 960, which is struggling with most newer games tbh.

1600x probably won't be pushing out 1080 144fps in a lot of titles, probably mostly in the 100-120fps range, shouldn't have a problem pushing 75fps in most games at 1440 though. I think it's more of a question of whether you want better graphics or some more fps

I'd go 1440p, but why not save a little longer and get the best of both worlds?
Or better yet, an ultrawide.

Hmmm yeah I was thinking myself that I would probably prefer 1440p, sacrificing some frames since I don't particularly enjoy fast-paced multiplayer games like Fortnite or Battlefield. Still, the smoothness of 120fps is quite appealing... Anyway, thanks for your opinion, I think that confirmed my initial thoughts.

I would say it depends on how picky you are when it comes to how great your games look. With higher settings, you may not be able to push too high over 60 at 1440p, hence the 75hz. But if you are willing to sacrifice beauty for frames, then 1080p 144hz all the way. I personally might be going that myself with my 2060 here soon, because 1080p is sexy enough for me and I just want a smooth gaming experience.

Well I was thinking about the kind of games I play and they're usually singleplayer/co-op multiplayer and not fast paced FPS online games, so the 1440p looks better (the best example for this would be Subnautica, beautiful underwater survival/horror, one of the best games out there, really recommend ot btw). The thing is that it's really hard to find affordable options at this resolution that aren't capped at 60Hz.
And in general, 75Hz monitors are really not widespread so there isn't much of a pool to choose from. But if i go up to 144Hz, the price goes up even futher, but I'm actually not sure if i can fully take advantage considering the previous remarks about the Ryzen 5 1600X struggling to put out framerates higher than 120fps.
