So how full should I leave a non-OS SSD?

Waifu4Life

Hi there,

My PC rig has the follow storage:

-250GB SSD for OS and programs

-2.5TB for files (docs, MP3, Videos, etc.) and setups

-2TB SSD for games (Steam, GOG and others)

I know the old rule of thumb when it comes to the max capacity you should fill your OS drive, but what about non-OS drives, specifically an SSD. Can I get my money's worth and fill that sucker to the max or leave room? Currently, I have 143GB left on that gaming SSD, should I stop, continue or make some room?

Thanks

It's the healthiest to leave about 15-20% clear. SSDs usually "move files around", and that's good for them.

What SSD is it?

Id stop filling it at 90(ish)%. 95% is fine but you start to dig into the lifexpectancy.

You're already around where I wouldn't feel comfortable about filling it any more. I would at this point either offload games I don't use much to a HDD, or buy another SSD.... but more likely offload.

It's not the end of the world if you dip into the 90s either, it's just not that great

Wouldnt load more onto it than you have. You will mostly only read from it. So life expectancy is fine. Dont think you will use it anymore the day it runs out of writes

So many answers. Oh well, just ordered a new 1TB SSD from Amazon, I'll move my non-Steam and GOG games as well as my emulator ISOs on there.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!
