Water Cooling and Radiators

Hello,

 

This is more of a question but, does it matter what way the radiator is, By this I mean in weather you place the fan in between the case and the radiator or if you put the case in between the radiator and the fan as long the fan is either pushing or pulling the air into the case.

Push is marginally more effective, especially if you've got a fan filter and/or restrictive flow, but it's generally not an overwhelmingly massive difference, a pull configuration can be used if necessary.

What you do want to watch for is using appropriate sized screws for mounting the rad to the case. Too long of screws will damage the fins and/or puncture a flow channel.

So could I have my rad on the outside and fan on inside so fan pulls the air through the rad, yes I know that I would have to run tubing to it but i was gonna run it out then back through external water cooling openings.

I don't know why would you choose to do that, especially with more modern computer cases.

It is best to have the radiator inside the case, to protect it.

Having the radiator outside can also be a bit of a pain if you decide to unmount it.

 

The Cooler Master HAF 932 that I used in the past has the tubing ports to route them outside of the case...I have not seen anybody use those.

The reason for this is so I can show of the water cooling as I don’t a window side panel and ther is not enough room for a rad and a fan on the inside

What computer case are you using?

Exposing the radiator is risky...as the cooling fins are quite fragile.

Example, this user dropping a screwdriver on their radiator...

I have the thermal take  element s and also I have seen mesh like rad covers, I could use one of those. (Image bellow)

Well those are supposed to function a dust filters for fans...but I guess they could  work.

The Element S does not support any form of long (e.g. 240mm or 280mm) radiator water cooling, so you'd have to do some modding (e.g. cutting).

 

But EVEN if you do that, are you just going to have your radiator sit on-top, or lay on the desk?

Where would you mount the radiator?

 

120mm and 140mm sized liquid coolers DO exist, though.

My plan was to mount the rad on the back 140mm and put fan inside then run the cooling through the external cooling openings then mount reservoir on inside on the double 60mm then later then run me loop inside.

 

I don’t see a reason for modding

I feel you're going to need to take a moment and consider if the extra effort your putting forth to display a small section of your tubing is going to be worth it;

It's going to be at the rear of your case, generally the least desirable side to see.
What you are able to see, unless you've got some extravagant loop encircling your case (in which instance, i'd find it VERY difficult to make look presentable), is going to be minimal at best

You're going to be losing efficiency from both your pull configuration, bleed from the gaps presented by your mounting options and dead zones presented by the mounting for 140mm options (assuming the above picture is your case), and then even further with a mesh dust cover added on top.

Ah, didn't notice the tubing cut-outs there.

 

All-in-one water/liquid coolers are out of the question, and you will be using a custom loop without a doubt.

In that case, I would STRONGLY recommend that you consider getting a water cooling compatible case.

You are already going to dump $200 ~ $300 minimum on water cooling parts; I don't see why you would not spend $50 ~ $90 (higher if you want) on a new case.

 

A single 140mm radiator configuration is not going to be any better than a mid-level AIR cooler.

There is just not enough surface area with just 140mm.

240mm and 280mm would be the recommended/ideal.

 

It will making working with the custom loop MUCH easier (e.g. easier to assemble, route, leak test, and maintain).

You would also be able to show off your entire system internals.

Ok I think I might as well just by a new case but every time I’m looking for a new case I cannot find what I’m looking for.

i need a case that supports

4 x 3.5 front panel drive bays 

4 x 3.5 internal HDD bays

1 x 2.5 ssd internal bay

e-tax support

plenty of cable management room

plenty of pci slots

water cooling support

and good looks

3.5" front panel bays...you mean 5.25" for DVD / Blu-Ray drives?

It doesn’t necessarily have to be e-tax as I’m only putting a ASUS b450-f but e-tax is more upgradable, thank you for the suggestions
