PC for VR

Hello,

i see that here is no category for PC builds.

 

I want to build PC for VR and not sure if i want to go with single GPU or SLI.

If i go with SLI i prob need to use the 2066 CPUs because of the PCIe lanes right ?
With single GPU i would take prob 9700K + RTX 2080ti.
I would use 2x 1080ti for the SLI config but which CPU 2066 ?

Almost always best to go for the fastest single card you can.

Even if you go SLI, there isn't really a significant performance penalty from using consumer platforms and two GPUs at 8x each.

In case you really want to look at 2066, I'd suggest the lowest model of the refresh range, the 9800X. It gives you 8 cores and 44 CPU PCIe lanes. The 1st gen lower core count models only had 28 lanes so you have to run 16+8 for two GPUs. Having said that, the 7800X (6 core) is really cheap now, although a compatible mobo still isn't.

I guess i will go with 9700K + 2080 ti then. 2080ti is still kinda garbage.You pay 400Euros for a feature that you won't use.

There are less than a handful of VR games that support SLI so you'd be wasting a lot of money for 0 gain doing that.

Support for SLI in VR is extremely limited...which is very sad cause it would be the perfect application for it...GPU 1 render left eye and GPU 2 would render the right eye...but it doesn't work unfortunately...as far as i know, VR Funhouse which is a VR experience designed by Nvidia is the only application that support SLI in VR (might be wrong, there MIGHT be a few others, but 99% of them do not support it, that i'm sure of.)

 

Now, for VR, get the best GPU you can afford...you will want to do supersampling, which is rendering at a much higher resolution than the native resolution of your VR device...and for that you want all the GPU you can get...especially if you do more advanced simulators (project cars 2, Fly sims etc.) and the most advanced games are quite graphicaly demanding as well.

 

When it comes to CPU, all you need is something that can hold a steady 90FPS...so you don't want a crap CPU, but not necesseraly the top end stuff...unless you can afford of course and you want it to last 4 or 5 years+...9700K is a good choice, 8700K would do equaly well...

 

So, 2080ti and 9700K if you can afford such a config, with 16GB of RAM...will make for an amazing VR experience.

I don’t know how many people here have VR and SLI? But here is my experience.

we have 3 HTC Vives. Started with SLI 970s and 980s. Then 1080

 

5960X with SLI GTX 1080ti, 4790K with SLI Titan xP Star Wars and 5930k. 

 

Most VR titles don’t support VR natively but some do very well. 

The titan xp and 1080ti give an acceptable level of performance in a single card without increasing SS. But that just isn’t good enough for me, using Nvidia inspector you can get most titles to scale 25%+. Some zero.

But it does take a good amount of time fiddle, a lot of trial and error per title.

It was worth it for us.

 

If you are a plug and play guy, get one. If you like to fiddle, get two and enjoy the fiddle and the increased clarity and minimal reproduction.

It sounds like you're using one GPU for SS and the other for rendering ?
