I was in a school club last week and we had some activities going on. One of the members brought in a pair of speakers so we could listen to the music that we needed to listen to. (It's an English club, and we were singing "a whole new world" -- I know, gag me with a spoon.). They plugged the speaker system into the wall, got their iphone out and... Well, I had expected music, but I just heard "huh? this speaker system has the wrong sort of plug for a phone".

It took me literally 2 seconds to figure out what they'd done and I facepalmed so freaking hard.

What had happened is that they had taken the input cable leading out of the speakers and plugged the plug into the headphone jack. Not only that, but they had also failed to plug the RCA plug into the jack on the left speaker. So here they are, standing around a pair of speakers, scratching their heads, holding up an RCA cable for the other speaker, for all the world as if wondering what sound licking it would make. eventually, they gave up thinking all was lost and they'd have to just use the cupping method on the phone.

I take the plug off them, plug it into the left speaker, take the input plug out of the headphone jack, and plug the iPhone into the speaker set. Anyone with half a brain should have been able to figure it out. What do they say once I got their speakers working? They go "oooooooooooooh, wowwwwww, how did you figure that out?" and praise me as a genius.

    Speaking of which
I walk into school one day, and I need to go to print something off. Now, for the longest time, the school has used these bought-en-masse mATX desktops running Core 2 duos. Not fast, not cutting edge but they were pretty reliable and good for what they were needed to do. I walk into the computer lab to find that all of the core 2 duo PCs (not the macs, my school has a mac fetish) have been replaced by old Dell Optiplex's running on PENTIUM 4s and WINDOWS XP. I know the P4 was an excellent processor that sent the business world raving mad, but that was ten years ago, they downgraded and regressed by 5 sodding years.
What continues to happen these days, from when I first started high school, is that whenever there is a computer class, everyone immediately goes for the iMacs, because they look better... They go for the iMacs, not the PCs... The PCs are slow, but nowhere near as bad as the ancient iMacs they have, I mean, come on.
This is why I was glad that I got my laptop, because it has an A10 that turbos to 3.2GHz, 8GB of RAM and an SSD. It is literally beefier, faster and more powerful than any computer in the school by at least five years. they are still using old Macbooks, running on Core 2 Duos and DDR2. I refused to use the computers in the labs ever again when I had my laptop on me. Why would I?
So, the moral of this story, ladies and gentlemen is that American public high schools are the worst luddite suckers for bad investments than anyone else.

No, you're confusing that with silicon valley. In terms of computers, America is extremely good. In almost every other field of engineering, Germany and Japan dominate. (Hitachi's old hard disks, for example...)

Just to start off, I could spend an eternity reading this forum. I havent even gotten to page 20 yet and I have 314 to read... Ah, I kek'd so hard...

ONE. My kid brother inherited my first build from five years ago when I built my Trinity rig. One day, he came into my room and started whining that his computer was broken and that I must have broken it because I know more about computers than everyone in our family combined.
"That is absolutely ridiculous," I said, "Why would I want to mess with that POS machine of yours? it wouldn't be worth my time."
He said the problem was that the computer wouldn't turn on when he pressed the power button (see, at least he knows computers have power buttons)
I followed him in, checked his computer all over. Then I looked at the power supply at the back and immediately started sniggering. I then sat in the desk chair and folded my arms, smirking at my brother. he asked why aren't you fixing it? I said because you can't figure out the ridiculously trivial problem. He went ballistic. wailing, crying, spilling his guts on the floor, saying how mean I was. My dad came in and yelled at me to help him fix his computer. I said no he needs to figure it out for himself, he's a big boy. Then he left and I gave up and helped him. now, my brother's only 11, but even he should be able to figure out that there is a SWITCH ON THE POWER SUPPLY THAT HE TURNED OFF A WHILE AGO without bawling his eyes out.
TWO. My brother had yet another issue with his computer. His screen wouldn't connect to the computer. I instantly looked over the back of the desk and started laughing. The VGA cable wasn't even plugged into the screen. This upset him again, so I plugged the cable in and went on my merry way.
THREE. Another story about my brothers computer, but not regarding him that much. He wanted to play Portal on his computer, and so needed a video card. My dad bought him this POS 5450 for $30. Now, let me just tell you a little bit about the computer. I built it five years ago. It is running an ancient 2007 Athlon64 X2, 2GB DDR2 and a 250GB HDD. It is literally the worst computer money can build and I do not care what anyone says. A while ago, I said to my dad I was thinking about building another machine (I have a job now so I can do that.) he said why do you need to, theres no point wasting money to build a machine that you won't use (Cough cough I handbrake game and edit for days.) He suggested that instead of building a new computer I should buy my brother a better graphics card. WTAFITS.
    *S*I*D*E*N*O*T*E*
I learned most of what I knew about computers before this year from my dad. After hooking up with some friends at school who are really tech-savvy like me and who showed me LinusTechTIps' channel, I realized that my dad actually doesn't know sh*t.
I dragged him to my brother's computer and showed him the rig. It has a DUSTY 230W PSU (I KID YOU NOT) that is barely holding up that 5450 and the X2. I tried to explain to him that the 200W R9 270 I was putting in my dream rig(which he wanted to shove in this dinosaur) would suck all the power out of the PSU, leaving none for the CPU. He shrugged this off, saying I didn't know what I was talking about. Then I tried to explain to him the concept of BOTTLENECKS. The motherboard has 1 PCIe1.0 x16 slot and the CPU would never support it anyway. It's so ancient it has an IDE slot, for heaven's sakes.
    Some people...
FOUR. Dad decided that our 2009 iMac ($1800 and easily cost more to repair) needed more RAM. I followed him out to Best Buy(uurrrgh) and watched as he (against my protests) bought 2 sticks of DDR3 DIMMs(I'll let that sink in for a bit -- DIMMS.) and then followed him home and watched as he tried to convince himself that they were the right modules. Back to best buy (urrgh) to return the DIMMS and pick up some SODIMMs. Install the chips, I look at About This Mac. I leave the room emotionally scarred while my dad's vivid imagination is convincing him that his iMac is so much faster. the computer has four sticks and 12GB of RAM. That can only mean one thing.

    He's using mixed RAM.

I died a little inside that night. I needed a fox loli to comfort me...

FIVE. My mother, who worked at Tech Support for APPLE COMPUTERS in the 1990s is constantly asking me for help on her MAC.
SIX. My dad, who married my mother mostly because he loves her but partially because she got him cheap Macs, has an ancient Power Macintosh M3076 (No, I am not joking) from 1995, which he forces ME to keep in my wardrobe. I have begged him to get rid of it. I have even tried bribing him to do it, but he is more stubborn than his father. He has convinced himself (notice how he convinces himself about a lot of things he doesn't understand... are you sensing a trend yet?) that he will one day run his own computer museum full of legacy machines NOOOOOOOOOOO. I WANT THIS COMPUTER ERASED FROM HISTORY. JUST LIKE THE APPLE LISA AND OS 9!!
SEVEN. Dad has an HP 200LX, an ancient Dell with a P4 and a HP Pavilion dv6000 with a broken screen and a distro of Vista that doesn't think it's genuine. Same story with all of them. He will not throw them away.

********Warning, the following bit is my disposition as a result of my loss of faith in humanity due to the past and future tales of the stupidity and ignorance of the masses, and you may find it creepy, overly obsessive, controlling or disgusting.

In closing, let me say this: I babysit for friends of my parents. They have three girls and a boy, the girls think I'm the coolest babysitter ever, the boy is kind of "meh" about me because he's a boy. Because the girls are the sweetest kids I know and most little boys I know(and I know dozens) are just selfish and whiny little twits, I have decided that when I have a child I want a daughter. BUT, I will bring her up around computers. I would like my future wife to deliver her in a room full of computer hardware if that would somehow make my daughter more inclined towards computers. I'll clamp the umbilical cord with a zip tie and saw it off with a DIMM that will be enshrined forever. Her toys will consist of fans and mice and her mobile at night over her Corsair 900D-crib will be made of peripherals and adapters hanging from their cables. her shape sorting box toy will be an old motherboard with an old PSU and old RAM sticks. Her sippy cup will be a liquid coolant reservoir. I will control the temperature of her bedroom by using the fan controls and a stock-cooled 9590. She will be able to build a computer before she can run and she'll be able to set up a RAID before she can talk properly. On holidays, we will go on trips to Best Buy carrying her on my back. We will laugh as countless filthy casuals are lured into buying overpriced computers and hardware, and then one day at age six she will leap down from my back and roast a geek squad member over the coals about whether RAM affects framerates and CPU performance. She will not have a doll house. Instead she will have a Fractal Design R4. Her teddy bear will be a plush desktop doll. She will be the Bane of all Luddites' existence. Girly girls and sporty boys will revile her, tech-savvy people will bask in her glory, and she will be known as the only six year old that Best Buy salespeople ever feared. Yes, I can see it now...

A lot of you might be thinking "what a creep" and some of you will probably say "what would your wife say about that?" well, my friends, that is why I must find a girl with the same obsession I have. Hopefully some of you will understand.

It is a common belief and stereotype that girls cannot be as techy as guys. My child will crush these prejudiced beliefs and grind them into dust...

KemoKa got a reaction from MultiGamerClub in Which video has the skit where Luke quits?
It was a Fractal Skit. Everyone knew it was fake for 3 reasons:
    1) Luke left without his shoes
    2) Luke left with (LMG's) microphone still in his pocket

and 3) Luke has already "quit" like this several times before. To new viewers it was a bit of a nasty shock, but anyone who knows LMG's motifs knows that everyone gets fired by Linus about every other day. It's a running gag.

KemoKa reacted to WkdPaul in Is it possible to run windows on a router?
as @AbydosOne said, depends on the router.
If you use a PC as a router, then yeah. If you mean a Linksys / D-Link / TP-Link router, then no.

Though, you could gut one, put an Intel Compute Stick in it and then pretend it's a router ...

the CPU is going on 4 years now. Ryzen 1600.

Motherboard: B450 Steel Legend, so not all that old.

Case: Fractal Arc Midi R2 - The last Arc Midi came out around 2013, so it's probably the oldest part.

KemoKa got a reaction from whm1974 in Raspberry Pi 400 Keyboard. Suitable as a PC?
I would prefer a used thinkpad as a daily driver since T420s routinely go for <$100. On the other hand, from what I've heard the Raspberry Pi 400 can be OC'd to upwards of 2GHz without any cooling modifications and still be reasonably stable, so for tinkering I think it could be pretty neat. I'm not at the point where I would consider one for a daily driver, though.

Jankiest thing of all time, but if you can get the whitelist off of the wifi port, it totally works

The drivers BSOD the machine if you boot it without the card installed though, so... that kinda puts a damper on the portability side of things...
