    Uhhhhh...
The EFI and Recovery partitions are 100% necessary to boot.
The EFI partition contains your bootloader.

OP, you do need those partitions. They're currently on your old 250GB drive though so you'll need to:
    A. Manually add them (a pain)
    B. Disconnect all but your new drive and reinstall Windows

If you don't want to reinstall you can do A, but I recommend B as it's a lot easier.
Make sure to completely wipe your new drive though.

That will let them look up specs to make sure your home device will do what they need it to.

Cuz I can install and run Win10 Home on a laptop that's a steaming pile of crap that won't be able to do anything productive.

It might prolong it's life yes, but keeping wireless earbuds charged at half is very fussy and kind stupid thing to do imho. You will need to charge them twice as often and I personally want to go longest possible time without charging.

sczze reacted to an actual squirrel in dolby atmos
Dolby atmos is a way to store 3d audio data digitally. It is done in a way so it can scale to a number of different speaker layouts.

It is like the text on this website. If you have a higher resolution monitor, then you get sharper text. But you aren't going to get the quality of a 4k display on a 1080p monitor, even if both displays are viewing the same website. Similarly, you don't get the spatial quality of a 7.1.2 system with just two speakers natively, even if both are playing the same atmos audio.

The speakers may have some processing that allows them to give more spatial information, but that is separate from what dolby atmos is.

sczze reacted to tikker in dolby atmos
This. There are multiple ways to do surround sound. One is to explicitely mix tracks for speakers, e.g. for a 7.1.2 mix you can have 8 audio tracks: 1 for each speaker plus one for the subwoofer. Dolby Atmos isn't surround sound by itself, but metadata accompanying the audio. Instead of explicitely telling the receiver "this track comes from the left surround speaker", the sources producing sound are treated as objects at a certain position in a space. A Dolby Atmos capable receiver then uses this information to determine what speakers should produce sound in order to accurately convey the position of the sound.

It is aimed at surround sound and accurate placement however, which is why receivers sometimes won't even allow you to enable it without more than 5 speakers, as there is no to very little point in doing so. It can also scale to dozens of speakers.

Then there are so-called Dolby Atmos enabled speakers, which aim to mimic the effect of in ceiling speakers by bouncing sound off of the ceiling. They work (I have them myself) if set up well, but are by no means a replacement for actual top channels. I feel they round out the sound, but aren't really mindblowing.

Best price/performance would be the Liquid Freezer II from Arctic like @boggy77 said.
It comes out of the box pretty much maxed, you might be able to get an extra 100mhz but remember to not push voltage past 1.325v.

sczze reacted to Mateyyy in AIO for Zen 2
Depends on how far "in the future" means, as AIOs are not exactly the best option for long-term reliability.

Manual overclocking on Zen 2 is meh. You're more often than not better off just enabling PBO and letting it do its thing.

sczze reacted to Mateyyy in AIO for Zen 2
Pretty sure they're all using 360mm aluminium fairly slim radiators, so the whole quieter/better question comes down to the fans and the fan curve.
If the H150i you picked uses Corsair's quite decent ML120 fans, then I'd guess they're better than the ones NZXT includes with their AIOs.

Are you set on this overkill of an AIO though? Any Zen 2 CPU could run even with PBO with an NH-U12S just fine in terms of temperatures, while also remaining quiet(er).

Generally for budget laptops I would look for at least an i5 if you are searching for intel based laptop. anything below that and windows(if you are using windows) will not feel as snappy. Paired with something like nvidia mx350/ mx250 should suffice for light gaming/photo editing and other similar stuff. 8gb of ram should be fine if you allow virtual memory(which takes some ssd space to stuff non critical processes so ram has more space and is usually automatically enabled in windows).

depends on what type of backup

is its file history backup then no, just the files will be saved

if it is a system image back up, everything will be saved (system setting, accounts, apps, documents)

i'm not too sure myself since i never had to worry about, or have it happen to me. (is still using a monitor from 2008).

there probably isn't any one reason to why it happens asides of the fact that things age and eventually fall apart. same thing applies to gpu's, cpu's and motherboards. eventually the gpu fans will have to be replaced, eventually the cmos battery on your motherboard will have to be replaced, and even your cpu fan may break. and after awhile, you will have to replace the gpu, cpu, and motherboard all together just like you would with your monitor, laptop, or ipad.

sorry i couldn't give you a more informative and exact answer to your question (good question btw)

Yes, because one of the drives will have failed to respond in time or returned data that is different from the other drive. When the bad disk fails to read the sector, it will mark the sector bad and attempt to relocate the data to a reserve sector.

The parent RAID controller, be it Hardware, or Software will also conduct a checksum test comparing the data returned from each drive.

Filesystems like ZFS are insanely robust, even on single drive solutions.  When you add in Mirrored, or RaidZ# setups..etc.

Most Lenovo laptops come with lenovo vantage preinstalled and use "intelligent cooling". Intelligent Cooling adjusts fan speed, maximum performance, and manages your battery life. This feature has 3 modes (Quiet mode, Balanced mode and Performance mode) and is accessible by the Windows performance power slider.

This feature is not exactly very well built into Windows from my experience but you will have to do with it. The controllers for the fans are not controllable and controlled by embaded controllers(if im not wrong, but i am not sure), so there is no software that you can use to control the fan speed.

There are two things that you can do that works to solve your problem(in my experience).
    1) Undervolt. Undervolting is a relatively simple process and there are many youtube videos on how to do it. You can refer to this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DX1UJa65JM.
    2) Prop your laptop up with a stand(or any that can). Your laptop fan takes in air from vents on the bottom side of your laptop. Proping it up can increase air flow and in my experience, does improve cooling by 2-5 degrees celsius. If you don't have a stand, you can prop it up with eg: an eraser. Just make sure that the vents are not covered and is lifted up from the table.

I dont have much advice about cooling pads, repasting thermal paste, etc as i dont have experience with that but generally those are last resorts/

    I hope this helps!

You won't notice data corruption unit you either read, or write to the bad sectors.  Typically the system locks up while attempting to read/write the sectors because the I/O request sent to the disk is not being responded to.

Think of the Computer as the boss, and the corrupted disk as a lazy employee.  The boss asks the lazy employee for the report, the lazy employee can't provide the report.  So the lazy employee scrambles like mad to fix, create, correct the report.  Mean while the boss is waiting, wondering where the report is.

If the disk error correction works, then after a delay, the boss gets the report.

If the disk error cannot be corrected, the lazy employee tells the boss sorry I can't give you the report.

Then if you have mirrored array, you have 1 boss and two employees doing the exact same jobs.  When one employee is lazy, the other provides the report while the lazy employee bumbles around.

Raid 5 would be 5 employee's working on a project, and each employee does their own work + a portion of each other employee's work.  When one employee is lazy, the other 4 employee's pick up the 5th employee's slack and provide a finished project.

Like all spinning rust, you have about 2 major opportunities for failure.

Early failure due to MFG defect, usually happens early in the life cycle, probably 3 to 6 months out of the box.

After that, the drive is likely normal and will provide reliable usage for the first 4-6 years of its life. Beyond that, every day is a blessing and the chances of data corruption rise dramatically.  You should never consider single drive storage as "reliable" for important information.  Doesn't matter if its family photos, financial records, etc.

If the "data", whatever that may be, is important to you, you should be be storing it on some kind of Mirror, or Raid setup, or be paying for some kind of cloud storage solution where they deal with redundancy for you.

Not saying you need some kind of beastly home server.  But a simple disk mirror either via computer, or NAS like device is fine.

Well, I have one external going on 7 years (HGST), and another going on 9 (LaCie/Seagate). My parents have one that's at least 12 (Verbatim/Seagate), I think...

Power-on hours don't mean much in terms of drive life. Power-on count is probably a better indicator (I've had drives in my server with POH above 20K and POC around 100 that are still going strong).

On the flip-side, infant mortality is a thing, so basically don't count on any hard drive to turn on the next time you need to use it. Keep backups. Keep backups of backups.
