    The folding month curse strikes again... 
     
    I spent the night/morning in hospital... This is unrelated with my recent COVID test, let's just say I'm sustained an injury. I experienced chest pains and passed out on the stairs. After a battery of testing there's no cardiac issues they can see but going to see a specialist to have a long term monitor to keep an eye on it. No breaks but I've sprained an ankle and have some inflammation in my tendons in my knee which is rather painful. Have not slept, going to try to sleep in the day but we will see how that goes. I'm hoping to sleep and do the blog post as usual, but if that doesn't happen @cbigfoot will most probably do the daily stats.

    Some practical and gentle reminders for all of us: 
     
    - In this context, we are all consumers or we are the product. Our viewership and engagements contribute to feeding the “machine” that LMG / LTT has scaled to. Remember to protect your own interest whether you are the product or consumer. 
     
    - We have no responsibility, nor should we actively defend GN or LMG / LTT due to the above. Extreme-ist fans, or those that subscribe to blind, and really, meaningless loyalty, doesn’t help the community at all. 
     
    - If any company desires to actually grow, they will do what is right by their consumers, even when we don’t notice the change. Continuous improvement is vital, especially to a company like LMG / LTT where economies of scale plays a factor in a business. What do I mean? I $1m company has to operate very differently than a $250m company. 
     
    - Finally, don’t let company errors drive wedges in the community. You didn’t cause the error, you have no responsibility to defend the company. We can all critique, but do so constructively, with intent, and with purpose.

    Here running COVID, Cancer, ... And not for fucking factories. OK after they can make money from our job, but not directly. THe@home also make money for Nasa for China for ESS, the Cosmology, The Seti, the Climate prediction.
    A company whay need to pay 100.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.0.00.0..0000000.00.0.0..0.0.0.0.0 dollars for research, when we are stupid to make for them for free. I'm also stupid. Now i running :

    NOTE: Still a work in progress for now.
    As the old BOINC FAQ was a bit of a mess, we have decided to replace it with a new one.
     
    Massive thanks to @tobben, as well as @Liquidus, @Brainiac777 and @Patramix for their contributions. Also thanks to @Me1z for notifying me of some broken links.
     
    Unlike the old thread, this one will not serve for discussion, if you have a question or issue, just create a new thread in this forum section, that's what it's for after all. Also, the target audience for this, at least for the time being, will mostly be beginners.
     
     
    What is BOINC?
    Boinc is a collection of various distributed computing projects, it gives you the opportunity to lend your unused processing power to do calculations in the name of science and progress! This can be to help medical science, physics, mathematics, better understand nature, or pretty much anything you can find a corresponding project to, it's up to you to decide what you want your  computing horsepower to be used for, this gives scientists the chance to gather big ammounts of data by giving them access to hundreds or thousands of computers, all of this is achieved by  running some software on your computer, there is also software avaliable for smartphones.
     
    Getting Started
    Well, first you need the program, don't you? The BOINC binaries can be downloaded from BOINC's website here. Alternatively, if you're running GNU/Linux, you probably already have BOINC available in your repositories and can it install from there. If your distro has a wiki/help page on it, I recommend reading that, since there can be some slight differences between distros with regards to setting everything up.
     
    Account Managers Vs. Local Configuration
    BOINC has something called account managers, for instance BAM! Their primary purpose is to consolidate administration over multiple projects and computers into one central location. It  allows you to join projects from one single place, attach and detach computers to specific projects and set all kinds of different configurations from one without needing to go to every computer and configure it separately. You can read more about it on their website (see link above). For now, we'll be sticking to the other variant, which is configuring stuff locally, as it is a bit simpler for  beginners.
     
    Joining Projects and a Team
    For each project in which you take part, you will have an account on the project website itself as well. Alternatively, if you're not running multiple machines or are a bit confused by account managers, you can also administer BOINC for each PC locally, which is what we'll cover here for the sake of beginner friendliness.
     
    Open the boinc manager, it should be the basic viewer by default, click "Add a project" (screenshots are from tobben, hence why not English, but it should still be understandable):

     
    If you wish to use an account manager, you can click "Use account manager" here, then enter the URL of your account manager of choice, your PC should then sync with the account manager. Alternatively, for not using an account manager, click "Add project"

     
    You will then be presented with a list of all available projects. This is probably where you'll spend quite a bit of time, figuring out what kind of research you wish to support. You can join multiple projects and have them active on your machine at the same time, BOINC will just distribute computing power and time among them.

     
    Pick the project you want, click "Next" and proceed to make an account. This will create an account for you on the home page for the project you choose. You will have to make a
    account for each of the different projects you want to join, if you already have an account on the corresponding poject click "Existing user" and log in.

    After you have done this it should take you to the web browser and give you some options to join a team and configure your settings.
     
    Joining Teams can be a bit tricky. You can join a different team for each project, so you need to join the team of your choice for each project separately.
     
    For some teams this can be done from within the BOINC manager program, but sometimes that doesn't really work correctly, and in those cases you need to go to the project's website, log in to your accout and set your team membership there.
     
    To join a team in the BOINC Manager Program, click on "View" and set it to "Advanced view". In the advanced view, click on the "Projects" tab, here, you will find a list of your projects.
    Click on one of your projects that you want to join the LinusTechTips_Team  and on the left side under "Project web pages", click "Your account".
     
    If that doesn't work, you need to go via your account on the project website: Go to the community section on the right and find the field that says "Find a team" and click on it.

    Search for the LinusTechTips team and click on the result that is our team, LinusTechTips_Team from Canada, then click "Join this team"
     
    To confirm you're on the team, go back into the BOINC Manager, go to the projects tab in advanced view and see if it says "LinusTechTips_Team" under the Team header. If it doesn't, update the project. If it still doesn't work after that, something has gone wrong and you need to start troubleshooting.
     
    Some More BOINC Manager Info
    Most configuration in the BOINC manager as well as more detailed information will be done through the advanced view. For some configuration in the basic view, go to "Tools" -> "Settings".

     
    From the advanced viewer you can see your point statistics, see uploads/downloads the current projects you are working on etc. In the projects tab you can stop and start receiving work units
    for each individual project you are working on among other things, Something particularly useful in case of trouble is the event log, located in the "Advanced" menu at the bottom.

     
     
    Why isn't boinc doing anything?
    Often that is because BOINC by default is set to only work when your computer is in idle. You can change this in the "Activity" tab in the advanced viewer, select the options you wish.
    Alternatively, you can go to "Tools"->"Computing Preferences" in the advanced viewer, which will give you much more fine-grained control over when BOINC should do what.
     
    Using GPU and CPU for different Projects/
    Editing Project Preferences To edit the project preferences you need to go to your account on the specific project you wish to configure. In the "preferences" section, select preferences for the project.

    Click "Edit preferences", from there you can set if you want to use a GPU or CPU if not both for the projects, how many resources you want to dedicate to the project and so on.
     
    Badges
    In order to be rewarded with the Boinc Team badge, please note the following requirements. (subject to change)
     

    Contributor - When you have contributed more than 25,000 credits, your will qualify for this badge, to show your commitment to LTT and the team.
     

    Bronze Contributor - When you have contributed more than 1 Million credits, your will qualify for this badge. This reflects your serious and continued support of the team.
     

    Silver Contributor - When you have contributed more than 25 Million credits, your will qualify for this badge. This reflects your serious and continued support of the team and your very generous donation of resources.
     

    Gold Contributor - When you have contributed more than 100 Million credits, your will qualify for this badge.. This reflects your dedication and continued support of the team and your very generous donation of resources. You are now a legend!
     
    That's it. Once you hit one of the milestones, PM your Boinc ID to one of the moderators, preferably Whiskers, who will update it in due time.

    NOTE: This is not an introduction to bitcoin mining. 
    This thread was made to try and help anyone interested in understanding what they are and how they work, using the best of the knowledge and experience I have of them. I am by no means an expert. There is much about them that I do not know.   What are bitcoins? They are no different than a dollar bill you hold in your hand. Except for the fact that it's being held in your computer's hand, so to speak. The first thing to understand about currencies is that their worth is totally arbitrary. Think of currency as replacing the word "value". I can begin paying for items in paperclips as long as me, and the people receiving them accept their value. Bitcoins are simply a decentralized, digital currency. Decentralized means they don't have something like the Treasury here in America regulating and watching over them.   How do I get bitcoins? By running "mining" software on your computer is the best way to produce bitcoins. The term mining in bitcoin speak means using your computer's processing power to calculate many many hashes per second. These hashes you calculate help the bitcoin network run effectively (more on that later) so you are rewarded for your help.   What is mining? This is the most misunderstood part of bitcoins so this section will have a lot to explain. To understand why we mine, you need to understand at least the basics of how the bitcoin network operates. Mining is done to protect the bitcoin currency and the transactions of bitcoins that people send. When a transaction is made, the data is sent to the bitcoin network. Transactions are stored in chunks called "blocks". When you mine, the bitcoin network sends you a block to "solve". Your computer takes it and randomly shuffles the information inside of it, then calculates a new hash for it. What the miners are mining for is a hash that is smaller than a certain predefined amount. (starts with a certain number of zeros. Since the hashes are randomly generated, you can imagine how unlikely that many zeros in a row are) This amount is the "difficulty" which is calculated automatically by bitcoin software based on how quickly the blocks are being finished by the miners. This corrects for increasing hardware performance and mining speeds. Once a block is finished by a miner, the new block and new hash are sent back to the bitcoin network. If it is confirmed to be correct, the miner is rewarded with bitcoins. The current reward is 25 bitcoins per block. The reward for a block is constantly diminishing until eventually, there are no more bitcoins to give out and all roughly 21 million bitcoins are in the market*. Due to the popularity of bitcoins and the large amounts of money that people spend on mining rigs, the difficulty is high enough that a very expensive equipment would have to run for months just to solve one block. This would certainly be inconvenient for anyone wanting to mine. We fix this by creating "pools". A pool takes place of an individual miner in a sense. They take the blocks from the network and instead of one person calculating hashes, the pool sends the job out to all of the miners that are in the pool. For example, I mine for the BTC Guild pool. When the pool finishes a block, it divides the reward (as evenly as possible) to the miners depending on how much work they did. This gives people a nearly constant flow of income and allows cheaper hardware to mine. Blocks sent to the network are calculated in a special way so that they can certify validity of the previous block. This confirmation process creates a "block chain" which is what makes the currency so great.   Bitcoin transactions Every transaction of bitcoins that happens is logged and can be publicly accessed. This, by definition, can forfeit the anonymity of the currency. You make transactions using an "address" which is randomly generated by software and is not tied to your true identity. Everyone can search any transaction that has been made but there are no identities attached so it actually makes it very difficult to trace. Bitcoin transactions can not be reversed.    Random Info *Q: You said there are 21 million bitcoins? After they are gone, what happens? I can't get them anymore? A: No, you just can't get "new" ones anymore. Once the pool of bitcoins is depleted mining will still be essential to the network and you will still receive a reward for your work. When transactions are made, there are small transaction fees that are taken out. These fees are the rewards given to the miners.   Q: Are they legal? A: Yes. Nothing about them is illegal.   Q: Don't people only use them to buy drugs? A: NO! Stop spreading that. They can be used for anything just like other currencies. The fact that drug dealers on TOR accept them, doesn't make them bad.     There is so much more about them to know but I made this relatively short. Have questions?     We all know and love the 1.1.1.1 DNS from Cloudflare. But now, on this foolish day, Cloudflare has announced two new DNS addresses that were quite in demand apparently. (technically four new DNS 😅).

    I've tried the 1.1.1.3 DNS on my router and it did indeed blocks those darn websites that are just everywhere these days.
    Honestly, this is great for families and likely for system admins of various businesses too, to prevent their users from watching pr0n on the job.
    I've been using the 1.1.1.1 DNS for a while now and am quite satisfied with it. But with these new DNS, I'm making the switch.
    Certainly, I am not personally going to use the 1.1.1.3 DNS... For obvious reasons  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
    But if the 1.1.1.2 DNS can offer somewhat additional protection, I'm happy to switch to it and will likely add this DNS to the list of things I should change on other networks that I manage.

    I have a 2700x in a Linux System that has two NVidia GPUs installed. The GPUs each need a thread to keep them fed leaving me with 14 threads available for CPU folding.
     
    However, if I try to assign all 14 threads for a single CPU "Slot" when a Work Unit (WU) starts I get first a message that the number of threads has been decreased to 13 since 14 is a multiple of 7 a "Large Prime" and then a message saying the threads have been further reduced to 12 as 13 is another "Large Prime".
     
    There is a bug in the A7 CPU Core where CPU Slots where the number of threads are a Large Prime or a multiple of a Large Prime will error out on Core A7 WUs due to issues in the Gromacs libraries as detailed here at Folding at Home and on the Folding Support Form.
     
    A Large Prime is defined as "above 5" for Folding so being reasonable and only looking at numbers below 128 threads we see CPU slots with 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89, 97, 101, 103, 107, 109, 113, and 127 or Multiples thereof will all have this issue.
     
    Not wanting to leave any performance on the table instead of letting the FAHClient define the CPU slot as 14 threads as it will using the default thread setting of "-1" I instead created one CPU Slot with 8 threads and a Second with 6 threads thus using all the threads on the Processor. Creating 10 and 4-thread CPU Slots would also work as would 12 and 2-thread CPU Slots and might result in better performance due to the more threaded Slot having a much higher Quick Return Bonus.
     
    Note: this system is not used interactively but is managed via the command line and using all your threads on a system that is used interactively using a Graphical User Interface such as X-Windows on Linux or under Windows will create problems so the general rule of thumb is to reserve at least one or two threads for use by the Operating System for interactive systems.
