On a desktop, unless you're manually swapping your display output from your dGPU to iGPU and disabling the dGPU in device manager, the power options won't ever shut down the dGPU as configured normally. Laptops can do it through Optimus because the internal display is wired to the iGPU and uses either redirect or a MUX to compensate.

You could also mess with power settings in the Nvidia Control Panel dynamically, there's a lot of features in there that have been there for years, including a power management setting. You could also dial down the TDP/clocks in a software like MSI afterburner when you're not gaming to just reduce the spiking. Fans can draw a decent amount of power too, so if you can run passive modes on all but a single intake and exhaust during those low loads, then you could probably chop off 10W.

My system can idle draw +200W while just web browsing, so I understand the pain.

josencarnacao reacted to Needfuldoer in Integrated Graphics help save electricity?
Probably not, because your dedicated graphics card is going to draw that 15w at idle whether it's in charge or not.

Laptops basically do this already with optimus. The igpu is connected to the built in display. The dgpu is turned on when needed and off when not needed to save power.

The issue is getting this running on a desktop, as its made for mobile. There isn't much info about getting the gpu to turn off on a desktop when the only the igpu is needed.

This probably isn't done on desktops currently as the power savings is pretty small, and you get some annoyances with optimus like being limited to the graphics out of the igpu, some performance hit. Sometimes you get weird software issues, and the software wanting to run apps on the wrong gpu.

Gamers Nexus decently often adds power usage statistics when doing his tests. Valid, usually under max loads. And here, he occasionally has pointed out which components would be most economical with their wattage.

"Is it worth the added 30 currency items to get an iGPU", is down to allot of factors. How long do you use the device under idle loads/day? How much does your local energy cost? Are you using solar panels on yer roof? Do you supply power back into the grid, or do you store it somewhere around your house in batteries? How long are you intending to use the component? (years before upgrade)

Guestimating I highly doubt you'll "earn back" those 30 currency items. And better benefits can be gained trough undervolting some parts. Large case with amazing airflow, so your fans barely have to move/consume electricity. All aRGB should be avoided at all cost and whatnot.

I use my PC 24/7, and most of the time, it's just idling. When I bought my components, I did keep power usage in mind. And I've tryed finding a balance between power usage and aesthetics. Specs should be somewhere in my profile I suppose?

Power difference is relatively negligible. You're looking at saving like 10£ maybe 20£ in a year if you're lucky and really use your system extensively for just browsing. If you want to save power you're better off limiting GPU/CPU power target, undervolting and maybe underclocking, running the monitor at lower refresh rates.
My RX 5700XT for reference uses about 8W while just browsing around and 25W when watching a video in 4K. This is with multiple tabs and other software open in the background like steam and task manager.

It's really about for what you use for if you are a non gamer it is better to have integrated graphics card and if you a hybrid buying is better and if some cases just remove the graphics card. And use it to save energy 🙂

The integrated graphics will always be with the cpu and it will consume energy wheather it had a dedicated graphics card or not.

Ok i see what your mean. And i think it's not worth but hey it helps in performance ngl. And when idle the ig is going to take up power and the idle power consumption of the dedicated GPU will not change.

To do detailed analysis, you could try Wireshark, though it's not necessarily easy to understand if you don't know your way around network traffic.

For a quick overview, you could try something like Glasswire, https://www.glasswire.com/ though Resource Monitor should already be able to show the source of incoming and outgoing traffic

Probably everyone at LMG has at one point triggered Linus with some mistake and will remember what it was, since he's a Language Purist.

Guys, please do this... it'll probably take weeks to get everyone to get to trigger him, but it'll be worthwhile. Just don't do it all in one day otherwise he'll stop caring for a while.
I can see one person getting called into his office for sending an e-mail full of common grammar mistakes.
And the finalle being everyone in in the company chat system agreeing to the same mistake, like typing: LEGOS! Fk yeah!

And please, place at a corner the name of the prankster.

Need to see at least a couple hundred "yes" votes if I'm going to put the effort into this to make it worth doing.

Also need anyone who votes yes to submit a bag they want to see reviewed. I'll probably only pick the most popular 3-5 though...

josencarnacao reacted to minibois in How did Wendel from level1techs get known as the go-to guy for server stuff?
    Wendell - before Level1Tech - was a co-host on a YouTube channel called TekSyndicate.
Without going into all the details, Wendel and co-host Logan split due to a whole lot of stuff (if I remember correctly including a different sort of direction).

Of course I don't know what went on, on the inside.. But Wendel actually got the YouTube channel (and forum I think?)
That is why if you go to the Level1Tech YouTube channel and click the 'videos' link, you actually get brought to this URL:

So a lot of Wendel's history on YouTube he has gotten through this YouTube channel. So if you want to see his YouTube history, you actually don't go through the Level1 channel, but rather through this one:
    https://www.youtube.com/user/razethew0rld/videos?view=0&sort=da&flow=grid
(I think.. If I remember that correctly).

TekSyndicate focused a lot on the same sort of stuff others tech YouTubers focused on in 2010-2014. Reviews of everything computers.
But they also did Linux stuff. Their community was very knowledgable about this stuff too. But even back then, Logan and Wendell had a similar dynamic as Linus and Anthony have now.
Linus/Logan did the brunt of the presentation, but when you needed all the factual info: you went to Anthony/Wendell.

Anyways, having said that - so kind of create some more YouTube validity for Wendell - he isn't a solely YouTube guy.
During the TekSyndicate days, Wendell had a traditional job as well. He is (was?) a consultant.
From what I can find, Wendell has always been kind of secretive on what his job is (well now it probably is YouTube, but I mean back in the day), so it's hard to say for sure what is was..

To wrap it up. He was/is a consultant, knows a lot of stuff, seems eager to learn, to re-iterate; he knows a lot, he has been in the tech community for a LONG time and he just overall seems like a nice guy.
I think that is why he is the go-to guy for so many tech YouTubers.

P.S. shoutout to the times when Wendell was the guy behind the monitors

like the title says, how did Wendell from Level1techs get to be known as such a wiz with servers? I've looked at his channel and it's almost entirely just news and occasional reviews, the same as LTT, Gamers Nexus, and the like - no mention of server stuff anywhere. He does have a couple of other channels that focus on Linux and servers. The server one is all from 4-years ago, and the Linux one looks like just a linux-centric news channel. Nowhere on HIS channels is there anything that would make me think he'd be my first choice for help setting up or troubleshooting a server.

However, every time he's appeared on LTT or Gamer's Nexus it's obvious he DOES know his stuff and at a fairly deep level (like Anthony does for workstations). He almost

Don't get me wrong. He's a cool guy (I really enjoy his teams' news videos), I just don't see anything to justify his apparent reputation (if you hadn't worked with him before).

And if Linux and MacOS were a sub-forum on their own, a "Switch to" pinned topic could be created in other to facilitate posts related to that being easily found.

If my idea doesn't go through, I'm on board with this one as a Plan B.

I value your opinion and thank your for sparing your thoughts.

Having started on Amiga computers, and on PC becoming a poweruser, I never transitioned to Linux.

Lack of drivers and not having the time to research how to perform "surgery" instead of just opening a file, selecting some options and be done with it, led me to never took the time to give Linux a try.

That being said, if you try to break down and compartmentalize the Ice water Bucket Challenge, and dissociate the Charity component, you get... a Challenge, where people that do do it, nominate others to do it. That was my train of thought.
Sorry if I offended you, but I tend to use broke-down analogies in life to get thoughts through.

Anyway, for the longest time I've been following Linus and LTT, I'm fairly certain that this "challenge" Luke and Linus are taking, is going to ripple into Power Users, and in time, onto Noob Users.

My suggestion aimed at bringing more Influencers to this HypeTrain because I'm sure many will take it, and more after those, etc..

Obviously, if the some-what-like-the-ice-cold-water-bucket-challenge nomination bit doesn't happen, my prediction will fail and many Tech Content Creators won't even bother to spare a thought on trying it, and Linus and Luke will just have made 5 videos for the Dollars.

The PC OS paradigm, in my opinion, needed a boost a long time ago, right about the time Linux was released for Android Devices... but no major supporters got the word out.

And a world where Microsoft Windows is not the default, is a more Secure and Efficient one, being much more accessible to everyone, specially those in exploited countries by the big companies such as Asian and African ones... making available the same tools as "developed" countries use to work in the XXI century.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I think I had to explain better my point of view, mainly because you  stated that this sub-forum, WHICH IS NOT dedicated to Linux was sufficient.

In my hometown "Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows" is just like a trashcan where you dump everything that is not recycled (again, this is an analogy, where I just want to give the idea that other contents are selected, and everything in here is just dumped all together cause it's NOT worth the time segmenting).

Thanks a bunch for your opinion, and take care.

It appears (on the surface - no pun intended) to be a Graphic Designer/Video Editor's dream machine. In various screen shots, the 'touchpad' on the right changes from a NumPad layout to an empty one. 4K main display. This could be a great thing to review. I have included the current price of this on an Australian website (and yes... that is a saving of 1 cent), so it's not cheap.

"This could be the year of the Linux desktop!"

I did the switch from Windows to Linux in 2007.  Recently I did the switch back to see what the experience was like, and it was AWEFUL. Windows is just terrible in so many ways (and yet, since they've standardized crappiness, it's easy to get support as everyone has the same mud on their boots).  So a category for "Windows to <not windows>" doesn't make much sense in my mind, because it's more a factor of "<some OS> to <some other OS>" that's the heart of the issue (it could just as well be "Windows to BSD" or "Windows to MacOS" or "Windows to TempleOS (the only way to go)").  I feel like the whole issue isn't "which is better", but more "how do I learn to use something different".  As an example, my cousin has NO IDEA how to use a keyboard and mouse, because he's only ever used a touchscreen interface; I could say he daily drives Linux (android), but the switch from "mobile Linux to desktop Linux" for him would be just as hard as "mobile Linux to desktop Windows".
