In talking to Microsoft about the problem I at least get why they don't want to keep S3 as an option.  With S3 sleep the firmware of each device  is responsible for how it goes to sleep, and of course many devices don't have regular firmware updates or are just broken.  By using S0 it is way more secure and overall has less problems sleeping and waking everything, but as we know S0 has it's own problems.

    Hello folks,

I had a meeting with Microsoft and they are taking our video about Windows Modern Standby very seriously.  If your Windows laptop experiences this problem (extreme battery drain while asleep, finding your laptop super warm in your bag with the battery drained) then there are a couple of things you can do.

For your own personal troubleshooting you can create a Sleep Study.  To look at this open Command Prompt as an admin and type in "powercfg /sleepstudy".  This creates a log of your devices battery life and sleep states, maybe there is something interesting in there.

More importantly, you can send feedback to Microsoft so they can try and diagnose the problem.  Here is how that works:

The Feedback Hub is the best way to provide detailed feedback on issues to the Windows engineering team. The tool gathers detailed logs and can run additional diagnostics to help us diagnose and fix issues.

Launch the Feedback Hub and give your feedback a relevant title.

Click “Report a Problem” then provide more information on the specific issue. Any additional details are valuable.

Click Next then choose Power and Battery >> Sleep (it may automatically select this based on what information you provided in the description). Selecting the right area is important as it directs the issue to the appropriate engineering team and gathers relevant telemetry from the system.

Click Next, then select New feedback.

On the Add more details section, mark as High Severity if you’ve hit the battery drain issue, then choose one of the items below, I’d pick Inability to use my PC if your battery is dead.

Continuing in section 4 – this is the critical part – gathering additional data, without this we will not have enough data to diagnose the issue.

For the battery drain issues please select Sleep (it should be selected automatically). Click Start Recording, button turns read, it will gather data, wait 10s or so then press stop (you don’t need to go through the actual sleep process, nor do you need the screenshots) it may take a minute or two to process after stopping the recording. You can also put your computer to sleep during the process then reawaken it – it will collect data across the process.

    Click Submit.

The most difficult part of diagnosing Windows Modern Standby problems is getting good data, so with any luck the LTT community can send them boat loads of data to try and get it fixed.

cheTesta reacted to nicklmg in Ordering from LTT store from EU - the extra tax added in checkout and required IOSS certificate
We're charging tax because we are submitting the IOSS certificate with each order. We have been submitting it all along. You shouldn't be charged VAT at delivery.

Legally, as of mid-last year, we have to charge VAT on any items sold to customers in the EU through our store. Unfortunately this has been an absolute mess of a policy rollout, so either countries within the EU are not properly updating their own policies, or the people managing this process on their side are not following it.

We've brought this issue up with our shipping provider, and they've run it up the chain a number of times. They have confirmed to us that our IOSS number is being submitted properly all the way to the receiving country. The info I've been given is that the IOSS info is submitted electronically, not on the package itself, and is making it's way to the receiving country for import of goods.

The issue we seem to be coming across is that either customs agents or postal workers (or maybe entire offices?) in some EU countries are not properly following the policy that has been instated there, and aren't matching packages to the electronically submitted IOSS certificate.

I'm not sure what the other store you're referring to is doing, but if they're not charging VAT at checkout on EU orders, they are not in line with current EU tax policy on ecommerce orders coming from outside the EU. I can't speak to their shipping situation - maybe they have a more direct route, or maybe they are shipping lighter parcels. We lose money shipping to the EU charging the rates that we do, and every other solution we've seen has been even higher from Canada to the EU. EDIT: If that other store isn't doing enough volume of revenue or orders to pass a certain threshold, they might not have to collect VAT at checkout. Unfortunately we have passed that threshold in a number of EU countries so the IOSS system is what makes the most sense for us.

My best advice is that if you're charged tax at delivery, reach out to your local post office and ask if they're matching electronic IOSS certificates to packages, and show them your proof of payment from the store which lists the VAT.

If they refuse to fix their error, then pay the VAT at delivery and reach out to our support team. If you can provide proof that you've been charged VAT on a package that had VAT charged at checkout, we will refund you that VAT and remove it from our filing with the EU. But we will need to see proof of payment of tax at the door/at delivery to do that. (And just to clarify this is only for VAT, which is collected at checkout for all EU orders by law. If your country has other import duties or taxes that it applies at delivery, that is on you)

Hope that helps explain the situation. Trust me, we're just as frustrated as anyone receiving one of these tax bills. Between UK & EU VAT rollouts last year, it has been an absolute nightmare trying to continue shipping to y'all, but we're doing the best that we can with what has been provided to us.

That doesn't make any sense and from older posts, it seems "taxes" portion used to be 0 when ordering from EU until recently. Also it seems in past some have received refund and LTT store support verifying that the taxes charged is a mistake. There is absolutely no reason customer should pay taxes twice or for taxes the seller owes someone.

It clearly labels "taxes" on the receipt and only extra taxes customer is liable for is the "VAT".

EDIT: The link you posted says customs and duty fees in shipping costs. Checkout still collects VAT, just as it is for any regular purchase.

    It's derived from average frametimes.

97% of the frames are drawn at a speed that would translate to an FPS higher than what we are reporting.

So in summary it's our new way of measuring minimum FPS, designed to ignore random dips from things like loading or what-have-you.

A video explaining the new methodology is probably in order at some point, but with all the new hardware launches and all the other crap that we always have going on around here, it's been a lower priority.

I find it amusing that this thread quickly derailed. It's really the mark of the Linux community, because everybody can have their own way.

We definitely are doing more Linux content in the future, and I definitely do intend to do more work on it. The way things went down previously, either we didn't have a whole lot of time to delve into things, or we just didn't have the resources - When we shot our Proton video, Proton was literally a couple days old. There wasn't a ProtonDB or any compatibility list to refer to other than Steam's whitelist, or really any troubleshooting. By the time the video dropped, however, that all changed.

Now, that's not to defend some of the things that went on in that video, but what I'm actually trying to say is that the next video will be done right, and I'll probably actually take @dragodin up on their offer and post in the linux_gaming subreddit when the time comes. I also probably won't make Linus bumble through it solo next time, either... I rather think the noob/mentor dynamic we have together works pretty well for stuff like this.

I've actually been thinking of moving over to Mint or Manjaro for my home PC, so it'll all be useful for me personally, too.

    Hi there Linus,
I'm a sub, a linux gamer and I'm from /r/linux_gaming. I really enjoyed your linux videos with Wendell and your first Proton video. I also noticed that there are always heated discussions in the comment section because of things that people said they could have been researched better. I'm talking about, for example, the fact that you picked an older nVidia driver version, or that the video didn't show some workaround for some proton games, or the fact that you suggested to download some stuff from the web instead of using the repo, etc...
I understand that Linux is a very alien world when you first approach it and that passionate Linux users are quick to criticize things that are not correct. So here's my point: I think I can speak for everyone when I say that for your next Proton video "We are happy to help".

Are you unsure about some aspects of Proton? Feel free to ask!
Proton workarounds are a pain in the ass? Ask away!
You don't know what's better between developer drivers and regular drivers? Ask us!
Do you want to know our general experience with Proton? Oh boy, we have a lot to talk about.
WTF even is vulkan_icd_loader? Seriously, we are here.

I'm not saying that we should review the script, because I think that it would go too far, but we can certainly have a discussion, and certainly we are happy to help.

There's no single "best answer" for "when should you release a video" these days.

Typically noon PST is when we target, since the majority of our audience is based in North America, and that tends to be a decent time for all timezones to visit the channel.

But, during times like these, we often have more than one video to release every day, meaning that some videos will release at other times. This was the case on Saturday, when we released Tech Showdown pt. 3 at noon and the Korean Monitor unboxing at midnight.

Another massive factor with YouTube videos is service and/or momentum. If a video is getting 30k+ views per hour, for a channel of our size, that's pretty strong when we're 10-12 hours into a video's lifespan. Since YouTube's algorithm focuses HEAVILY on serving your latest upload (since we all know that newer always equals better, right? /s...), it would be stupid to kill the momentum of that video when it's only 12 hours old by posting a new video and stopping much of the service of that previous video.

So this weekend we had videos scheduled for noon & midnight on Saturday, noon on Sunday, and noon on Monday. Since the midnight release on Saturday did so well we decided to delay the Sunday release by 12 hours, and since the Sunday release was doing so well today we decided to delay the Monday release by 12 hours as well.

So... yeah. Essentially we have to be adaptable and make judgement calls based on a number of different factors. Nothing is ever permanent in our business  lol.

They didn't really give us any official reasoning other than "HQ told us to stop working on it". When we reached out to an AASP, they said there's a months-long wait list on parts availability, along with the lack of certification for technicians.

To clarify a bit further, the screen is at this point destroyed. The logic board may or may not be OK, and the power supply seems OK. Basically we listed those parts by going off what the Apple store told us their troubleshooting steps were going to be, and the fact that their replacing the PSU (the one step they managed to complete before being told to stop) didn't help.

Firefox is fast becoming my favorite browser, and stuff like this makes me even more happy to use it....though i dont use facebook anyway
Given everything that has happened over the last few weeks this is going to become a handy extension for anyone that uses facebook. Hopefully the concept of the tech can be applied to all tabs in the future, not just facebook.

Seems they are somehow able to contain anything related to facebook regardless of how you got there. When i first started reading i thought there was going to be some stipulation that if you accessed it from another site instead of going directly to the URL that it would not work. however this doest appear to be the case.

the one "catch" seems to be
But really shouldn't be a big issue since this is likely how they got a lot of the information anyway. I would suggest that no one used the "login via facebook" to create an account or to leave a comment on a third party site as it will not be contained by this extension

so while it wont prevent Facebook from having your information that you give them, it will prevent them from tracking your web browsing which they have been accused of in the past, even if no Facebook tab is open.

According to the author of the extension; "The feature uses a unique architecture of Firefox called OriginAttributes" and therefore not able to be migrated to other browsers in it's current form, but there might be similar things popping up for other browsers that do similar "containment"

I quite like the concept of it and will be looking forward to further iterations of it and seeing what other stuff it can be applied to.
