Did you check you didn't accidentally flip the wifi switch to off? Most laptops have a harware switch for wireless. Also, if you have a usb cable you should be able to tether your phone physically so you don't need wifi to work.

I repair electric mobility appliances, such as powered wheelchairs and electric mopeds. The appliances are owned and governed by the local healthcare district, and they are in loan to the end users. The users don't pay a dime for the utilities, nor repairs/service. In Finland it's required by law to have all such appliances serviced annually, so there's no end to the stream of work we have coming in.
The job itself is great, I get to fix things and tinker all kinds of stuff, and work with some really smart and resourceful people.
The only negative side in the job are the managers and executives in our company(that's owned by the city I live in). Most of them are lazy, cocky, overpaid morons who sit and browse facebook all day. 

Oh and this place has been here so long that there is a unsold copy of Windows 3.11 on 3.5" Floppy Discs sealed in the store room.

My latest profits from dumpster diving at work, a 90cm tall pile of acoustic panels, 60x120cm and 2cm thick. If I had bought this brand new from a hardware store it would have cost ~1500 euros.

Have you read Terry Pratchett's Discworld books? I think they're great, not like traditional fantasy but much more humouristic in a sarcastic and dark kind of way.
Also anything Tolkien is very good when you really get into reading it.

Couple years back a friend of mine bought a "gaming pc" from a store called Gigantti, without asking anyone first. He was wondering why it had such a low framerate in WoW at higher graphics settings, considering it cost 699€(~800 usd with the conversion rate of that time). I went by to take a look, and the piece of crap had a G3250, some low-end GT-series GPU, can't remember which one, 8GB of ram and a 1TB hdd. The clerk had just told him that the cpu was the latest generation Intel core cpu, and its great for gaming because it's "blazing fast". But that's not all. There were, of course, a bunch of pre-installed bloatware running in the background eating ram and cpu power, outdated windows updates and drivers, and a Home Basic version of windows 7. 
All this was told in the products technical specifications page on their website, but not in the tag at the store, it just had the price and some meaningless marketing jargon. In Finland this is legal, because you are supposed to know yourself what you are buying. Even the product specs don't have to be visible right next to it, they just need to be available if need be.

I don't think there is a way for them to legally monitor what you do on your own devices outside school Google, of course, knows everything you did in any account. Unless you set all the privacy options of your Google accounts properly, in which case they still know, but will pretend they don't (and warn you they won't be able to save your life by predicting what you are about to type). You can search for illegal things, but you can't do an illegal search. I mean, typing something in Google's search box is never illegal, whatever it is you type. If you really think about it, the non-electronic version of what you describe would be "I looked for a forbidden book in the library's catalogue". In a public library, not your school's. Seriously, this medieval shit has to stop.
