So I was searching what one could call 'questionable things' on my phone and then I noticed that I was signed in with my school email instead of my personal one (school uses Google for their shit). Well I'm not 100% sure how it works but I know that my school can monitor things, but I'm not sure what. (On the computers our school provides there is a program that stops searches if they are questionable, and sends a email to the IT person). Well if it did send an email (doubt it did tho) I could possibly be fucked.

Moral of the story, check which email you are using

I don't know what "questionable things" you were searching but it can't be that bad.

If you searched for something illegal then you're an idiot for searching about it using Google.

If you searched for porn or something then

1) Everyone does. If your school/parents gets angry for that then they really need to chill. It's like being mad the sun comes up in the morning.

2) Learn to use incognito/private browsing.

If you searched for that stuff on a machine separate from school (ie personal pc), chances are you're fine.

They most likely only monitor what goes through their equipment (computer id through switch or router), not the actual google accounts.

And even if you were found out, as long as it wasn't illegal,  you're fine. It might just be a little embarrassing.

Think of it as a learning expirience. Also, speaking from expirience in IT, as long as you don't do anything to call attention to yourself, its extremely unlikely anyone will find out. Student information is protected under several weighty laws in most countries, and there is so much of it that it would be a ridiculous hassle to go through the logs, even if the content is flagged automatically.

In the future, work on keeping your brains out of your pants though. ;)

F#$k timezone programming. Use UTC! (See XKCD #1883)

  • I don't think there is a way for them to legally monitor what you do on your own devices outside school
  • Google, of course, knows everything you did in any account. Unless you set all the privacy options of your Google accounts properly, in which case they still know, but will pretend they don't (and warn you they won't be able to save your life by predicting what you are about to type).
  • You can search for illegal things, but you can't do an illegal search. I mean, typing something in Google's search box is never illegal, whatever it is you type.
  • If you really think about it, the non-electronic version of what you describe would be "I looked for a forbidden book in the library's catalogue". In a public library, not your school's. Seriously, this medieval shit has to stop.
