KenjiUmino got a reaction from pilot35 in Does thermal throttling really affect the performance of the laptop? If so, how much?
reasons not to buy a thermal throttling laptop:

    - you will not get the performance you paid for
    - it possibly shortens the lifespan of your laptop
    - a thermal throttling laptop is a design failure and failure should not be rewarded

yeah ... i remember those times as well. somewhen 2004-ish when downloading a pirated album would take forever and (thanks to pay-per-minute internet) cost about as much as going to the corner store and simply buying the CD.

but then i remember buying resident evil 5 on steam a seond time when it was on sale somewhen mid 2014 or so even though i already had it on disc.

why? because with my new cable internet it was faster to install it over steam download than to install it from the fucking disc.

we sure have come a long way.

it might even be possible that the servers are still online to this day. the website is still online, and i did not hear anything about the messenger service being shut down.

from my observation, the bigger problem is that nobody cares about icq any more ... so, even if you can technically still send and recieve messages over icq, i don't think there will be a lot of people online to talk to.

yeah ... i dig it. used ICQ when i started getting that whole internet thing.

I was a little late to the party and only joined because my uncle handed down a 28k modem (8 bit ISA slot, dip switches for IRQ and stuff instead of PnP drivers)

napster was already gone, but i used various other iterations of p2p software ... limewire and all the different names i can't remember ... various p2p tools and protocols shooting out of the ground like mushrooms just to die about as quick.

it's pretty much the same problem that most "HD" rereleases today have.

sometimes you can see that they REALLY rolled up their sleves, dug out their old source material or even create new textures/backgrounds and put effort in it to make it look as good as possible on the current hardware (resident evil remake and zero is a good example)

but most of the times they simply took the game as it was released on previous gen hardware (say, PS2) bumped up the rendering resolution, slapped the "HD" sticker on it and rereleased it for xbox 360/one or PS3/4 and steam complete with blurry FMVs / backgrounds and everything

you feel like you lost detail because ... well ... you did ... i'll take IPS over TN any day of the week no matter what.

and the drop in resolution is not worth the increase in framerate either - in my opinion.

    exactly that - i can't agree more.

it's the same with all the pseudo-pg-kiddos telling you that you NEED to tweak resolution this and detail settings that to be better at a game

if you have real skill you can game on yo mamas 1080p60 monitor and still own the game.

Glad to hear that you're willing to give Linux a shot, but have you tried a clean windows install? Sounds like your current windows install is just having some issues that could possibly be fixed by doing a clean install. If that fixes your problems you'd be better off that way because you could still use Premiere.

If you want to use Linux anyway, I would suggest that you stick to Ubuntu 18.04 because it's the most beginner friendly and compatible with KdenLive.

Still looking for more? Try browsing around a bit on https://distrowatch.com/. It has loads of Linux distributions listed on there, so you can find the one most suited for your needs. I suggest sticking to debian based distros to keep things simple.

    probably this.

the surveilance servers operating system was very likely not windows based but winodws does not understand a whole lot of non-microsoft filesystems (if any at all)

the drive could have been formatted to ext4, ext3, ext2, ReiserFS, HFS, XFS, Btrfs or whatever else windows simply does not know what to do with.

if the data currently on the drive is not important then i'd just delete all partitions, create a new one and format that partition to NTFS - then the drive should be detected properly and work as expected.

i know - and if buying used ram actually works in your area then that is good for you - it sure does not work here because dumb fuck sellers don't know how to ship RAM in a way so it will arrive in one piece.

so i have to buy new ram exclusively and the price difference with new ram isn't much

"Great audio" for under $50 doesn't really exist, but for speakers you can get anything from Logitech. For a microphone for gaming I'd recommend a modmic, but for multimedia production the Blue Snowball will be better. For a "gaming headset" I'd recommend just attaching a modmic to regular headphones, but if you must have a "gaming headset" I believe HyperX makes some good ones, such as the Cloud II.

You can't.. not yet at least (Windows 10 S is discontinued, and MS said they plan to introduce "S Mode" on all editions)
But what you can do for now, is Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & Features, at the top, you have an option that allows you to lock the system down to Store apps only. Any FUTURE programs and games not from the store cannot run. So she can enjoy Chrome/Firefox but can't get image.jpg.exe from an email and run it. The feature works really well from my tests. As it allows originally installed programs, so no driver issues, and you can get whatever program you want while protecting yourself

with 2k on hand and 600 bucks a week - shouldn't it be possible to save enough to afford a decent used car by the time college starts WITHOUT touching the PC at all ?

SSHDs are regular spinning platter HDDs with a small SSD (like 8+ GB) on top that is used as a cache - files you use a lot (like the OS) get loaded to the SSD for faster access times - this happens transparent so the OS only sees one large hard drive.
