First Impression of 144 Hz: Underwhelmed

Spent two weeks with a 144 Hz monitor.  I'm not particularly impressed.  Yes, it's working.  Display port cable (not HDMI).  NVidia Control Panel has it at 144 Hz.  Windows says its 144 Hz.  144 Hz is on in in-game settings menu.  FPS counters say 144+ Hz.  And I noticed the difference between 144 and 72 Hz on speed test websites.

 

Very first impression.  Not much of a "wow" factor at all.  The differences are subtle and it takes time to appreciate them.  I can't honestly say 60 Hz and 144 Hz is night and day.  Maybe more like late afternoon to early evening.

 

Is 144 Hz preferable and inherently better of an experience than 60 Hz?  In my opinion, yes.  But, perhaps it's a 10-15% amount of additional enjoyment, and that may be a little generous.

 

60 Hz Isn't THAT Bad

Another point.  Many others have said, "You won't notice a massive difference when you first turn 144 Hz on, but it'll be hard to go back to 60 Hz".  Kinda.  But why introduce yourself to a drug that doesn't do a lot for you, but is hard to come off of? In my experience, going back to 60 Hz isn't that bad.  It does feel a little sluggish.  Some detail and immersion is lost.  But it's not total hell.  However, I also feel like I lost some detail and immersion by switching from 1440p/IPS to 1080p/TN in order to experience 144 Hz.

 

Competitive Gaming

I play Overwatch mostly.   144 Hz didn't make me any better, and it won't likely make you any better.  It can help with providing some extra information for aiming and reaction time.  I'm a Tank/Support player, but maybe 144 Hz matters more for hitscan heroes like McCree that are aim dependent or fast-paced heroes who need smooth movement like Genji.  However, the vast majority of players at low to mid ranks are limited far more by their game-sense, positioning and ability management than their mechanical capabilities.  Going 144 Hz is helpful if you're among the top 10-15% of players (i.e. Diamond, Masters).  But refresh rate is maybe just 1% of what the majority of players actually need to improve on.

 

Image Quality vs. Refresh Rate

I already knew, going in, that resolution/panel matter more for general tasks and streaming, whereas refresh rate matters more for gaming.  However, even for gaming, I see 1440p IPS 60 Hz versus 1080p TN 144 Hz to be a near-equal tradeoff of quality.  So, with image quality mattering more than refresh rate for just about everything else, you can tell which direction I lean.

 

Of course, the amount of improvement this offers is entirely subjective.  I noticed a slight difference but not a major one.  It all depends on whether you know or care about the difference.  Similarly, I notice a major difference in quality between gaming on $150 Sennheisers versus $40 Skullcandy's, but most people don't know or don't care about the difference. 

 

Considering that hundreds of pages of discussion happen about buying high-end GPU's every 2-3 years, getting the best i7 every few years and building liquid cooling loops are mostly all centered around just achieving 144 Hz, this is at least worth examining

I can personally confirm there is a bigger difference (and this is the main advantage to 144hz screens) that fast pace action (even just moving your camera side to side a lot) make a very noticeable difference in my eyes, but everybody feting speed boosted out of the base, 60 vs 144hz is much less noticeable.

I have to wonder how many people would see the difference between two renders side by side, one @60hz and one at 144hz. I feel like side by side comparisons would highlight the strengths of 144hz better. However I'm not advocating "144hz or bust", some games benefit from it but I would venture that most do not, aside for an aesthetic stand point. AS you mentioned, as a tank/Supp main you probably arent going to be grand master in a week.

For many people 60Hz is fine.  For some of us, 60Hz is not fine.  I get a pounding headache after about an hour of viewing motion on 60Hz (like playing games, just windows desktop is not a problem).

Do I need 144Hz?  No, I have an Overlord running at 90 and that works great.  I realize that those of us who are sensitive to such things are not the main market for these monitors, but extreme cases do exist.

you feel like you lost detail because ... well ... you did ... i'll take IPS over TN any day of the week no matter what.

if you have real skill you can game on yo mamas 1080p60 monitor and still own the game.

And yet, for me, just opening the start menu stands out as amazing due to how freakishly smooth it is.  I find it strange how different people perceive these things so differently.  There should be studies done.
