I mean expect it to run a bit warmer than a 8700k, so if your low profile cooler can handle an 8700k (which I doubt) it should be ok to handle an 8086k.

Snipergod87 got a reaction from C1ARK in ECC memory on a device that supports NonECC
You need a Xeon processor, and a Xeon capable motherboard

    1) Wont boot
    2) not possible it needs to be supported on the motherboard and enabled in the processor as well (cant exactly mod that)
2 other one?) that will work, ECC is recommended but not necessary (can prevent against bit flipping but that is very very unlikely)
    3) Again FreeNAS will with without ECC, honestly out of the DIY solutions I like freenas the most, I find performance for unraid to be aweful
    4) A possibility

So is 10+ FPS increases worth $800 and a complete re-install of Windows to you, is the question you need to find the answer to.

Not going to happen.  If you are hitting power limits the only way around that is to hard mod the power sense circuit on your GPU.

A BIOS edit could change the power limit but, AFAIK, all of the 10 series have the BIOS encrypted/signed.

    Steam can run on Linux.
Not sure about origin but I doubt it.
You can buy a legit Windows 10 Home key on amazon for ~$100

Snipergod87 got a reaction from mineblaster in OPTANE to improve RAID performance
Dont use RAID 5 only choices are between RAID 6 and 10 at that size.the 1GB of RAM per 1TB of capacity is more a of a thing for FreeNAS, if you are using Window than its handled differently.
I dont know if Optane can accelerate a RAID volume, and if using onboard (Intel RAID) RAID 6 is not an option.

You can use Windows Storage Spaces with the ReFS file system and setup mirrors/parity in Windows, and I believe you can add cache drives for storage spaces as well.  Not sure of Storages spaces ReFS support in the desktop environment but it is available in Server.

If you are going to use a NAS box like a Synology you could dump all the drives in there an use 2x SATA SSD's in RAID 1 for caching.

You should also look around as to what file system you want to use ReFS is nice due to prevention of Bitrot (BTRFS does this as well but for linux), FreeNAS's ZFS dones this as well, and offer some powerful dedup and compression settings.

UnRAID is another option if you want to look at that route as well, in general performance on UnRAID is pretty bad unless you use caching SSD's (again you will want 2 but can use only 1)  UnRAID handles parity differently than typical RAID configurations.

Correct, and 200 and 100 series (like the Z270) will not work, need a 300 series board.

All 6 cores will not run at 4.7Ghz unless you enable multi core enhancement in the BIOS, you may need to bump up CPU voltage as well.
To get an accurate temp readout using liquid cooling you need to run the stress test for 30 mins to an hour.
