Crunchy Dragon reacted to brob in [GB] My first Solidworks, 2D Design, and Gaming Build...
The i3-8350K is not a good value. I would suggest either the i5-8400 or i7-8600
This, except I would replace the psu choice with Corsair - CXM (2015) 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply.

Even my XP machine didn't have that much dust
What Athlon is that? Mine has a 64 X2 3800+(and yes, it came out with the heatsink as well haha)

1. No you should be good. This ties into the second question but by and large everything will just work.
2. Like above, sometimes windows is windows. In the systems I have upgraded from 7-10 or 8.1-10 things have gone very smoothly.

Crunchy Dragon reacted to Energycore in Raven Ridge Desktop APU´s Finally Here!
So the question, does the Ryzen 5 2400G compare to a 1500X or a 1400, that all depends on how much cache it's got enabled. If it's the 1400's 8MB, it's not gonna be great, if it's the 16MB of the 1500X it's gonna have way better performance.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from zombienerd in Raven Ridge Desktop APU´s Finally Here!
If this is the first-gen APU you spoke of in your previous post, then that was probably the best time for hybrid crossfire. By the time I got an APU(A6-5400K) it was pretty bad and there wasn't enough of a performance increase to justify doing it, you might as well have gotten a good dGPU.

That website really isn't useful
APU dual graphics was never worth it either.

Crunchy Dragon reacted to Streetguru in Raven Ridge Desktop APU´s Finally Here!
These APUs look like they're going to fix things for budget gamers. If only RAM still wasn't insane.

Well, in the AMD Slides, they compared the 2400G to an i5 with a GT 1030, and showed it having an equal score. If we go by that alone, the RX 550 handily beats the GT 1030 by a decent margin. I'm not sure if your calculations are taking into effect the lack of being a discrete solution, and being thermally limited due to the entire cpu/gpu combo's total 65W TDP.

Crunchy Dragon reacted to DarkEnergy in Has my thermal paste gone off? and some Newbie Overclocking Qs
A new CPU cooler is highly recommended. It sounds like this might be a prebuilt PC so yeah, reapply the paste. Yes, you can overclock it, but makes sure temps are fine first.

In most cases, it's cheaper to get one 2x8Gb kit instead of two 1x8Gb kits.
Welcome to the forums!

So you've gotta pay 3450 upfront to make $9k over the 2 years, but then half of that $9k goes to Spotlite.
So in essence, once youve made back the money for the rental, and given the 50% to spotline, you're making a measly $1050 over 2 years, whilst having to pay to power the thing. Doesn't seem all that great.

If it's overclocked, yes. It'll be fine.

Crunchy Dragon reacted to Oshino Shinobu in What, if anything, is different about USB C 3.0 Gen 1 vs USB A 3.0?
Gen 1/Gen 2 is for USB 3.1. USB 3.0 is just USB 3.0, no Gen 1/ Gen 2 stuff.
If it's Just a USB 3.0 USB C connector, then that's all it is. Same as a USB 3.0 Type A connector, but with Type C instead, the features are the same, just the connector type is different.

Crunchy Dragon reacted to porina in Intel Optane 800p
Source: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12290/intel-previews-optane-800p-56gb-and-118gb-m2-ssds
Since it appears no one else cares about Optane I guess I'll do this one. In short, the 800p are M.2 SSDs come in 56GB and 118GB capacities, filling the gap between the 16/32GB cache modules, and the 280GB+ of 900p. No performance data yet, but it is presumed they still have the class leading low QD random read speeds. With only a PCIe 2x connection they're not one go for if you want to show off sustained speeds. No idea about pricing but I'd bet it'll still be enough over the 960 Pro no one here will take it.
If this had been available I would have got the 56GB module for my testing instead of the 280GB 900p which is overkill.

it's a good PC, but weather it's a good PC to upgrade TO depends on your use case...
