Yesterday I was talking with one of my old teachers who was considering getting a new computer for gaming and 3D modeling. He said the one he was looking into was a $700 pre-built from Best Buy. Immediately alarm bells started going off in my head and I offered to build one for him or at least design a parts list and compare it to the pre-built model. Reluctantly, he agreed, giving me a maximum price of about $800 (give or take a little) to see what I could do. So I designed a mini ITX machine with a 4690K, 8GB of RAM, GTX 960 (I introduced him to the the Shield TV and he said that was a great idea over an xbox for his kids) 1TB HDD, and 128GB SSD for $807. Then I asked him what pre-built system he was looking into. I looked at it and sure enough, my warnings of the pre-built market rang true. A non specific AMD FX processor, GT610, 4GBRAM, and 500GB HDD for $700.
After I explained just how bad the parts in that machine were, sprinkling in some performance graphs from various websites for added effect, he hired me to build his system.

It never says anything about 1440p, or that it'll be out performed by a Titan X.
It could be being marketed as the card that brings 4K to the 99% of gamers...

I said I want an SSD. My dad walks into the room, and then says: Why would you want an STD?

I make fun of fat people, skinny people, and normal people. I guess in my eyes everyone sucks equally. Yay for equality!

As we all know, Apple Pay is bringing NFC to many new companies. Well, one day I decided to go to Panera Bread during my lunch break at work. I saw that they adopted the support for Apple Pay, and of course knowing that NFC is NFC, I take out my Note 3 and try to pay. The cashier (or whatever they technically are) quickly stopped me and said "Oh, that isn't an iPhone, our systems only work with Apple Pay." I looked at her and just explained the technology and that a standard is a standard. She continued to refuse and called her manager over, who took the cashier's side. I told them I'd make a deal with them. If my phone works, my next bill is on the house, if it doesn't, I'll order a lunch for the staff currently at my store (there were 10 other people working at my store at the time). They agreed and I paid with my Note 3. Lo and behold, it worked. My next meal would then be free, and both the manager and employee were noticeably embarrassed as hell. Due to their doubts and attempts to stop me, a line was starting to fill out behind me of hungry customers. After seeing my success, several of them attempted the same deal (they didn't get it), but they did pay with NFC, and the cashier's face just grew more and more red as the next 3 customers payed with their NFC enabled Android device.
And to boot, they didn't give me a set dollar amount I could spend on my next bill, so I went in and got a $40 lunch for free, as opposed to my usual $10 meal.

Thats the kind of computer you buy really cheaply off of a non techy because it's "slow" or "broken" and take the 4790k out of and sell everything else.

A few months ago, I receive a call from an older customer stating that he bought a video card, and needed it set-up for his videos. It was a little odd, but not unheard of; sometimes they want me to set-up custom profiles, OC it, or generally give them the "thumbs up" when it's good-to-go. So I arrived at his house, and asked him to show me the lucky benefactor for the GTX 970 he purchased. He picks up a Macbook Air, and says "Here it is". (Sadly, it's happened before, so I wasn't as surprised as I would have been in the past) Attempting very hard to not audibly sigh, or anything else; I politely explained to him that the video card simply cannot fit into the Macbook, and was designed for desktop PC's.
THIS is what makes the story so great; He then asks, "Well then how am i supposed to transfer my videos to the card if it doesn't fit? I have this other drive I plug in to transfer my photos and music, but I need something to transfer my videos, so I bought this video card." He had a 2TB external drive he had been using for quite some time. However, he was under the impression it was only for music and photos - and that he needed a video card to transfer videos.
After doing my ABSOLUTE BEST to explain to him the folly(without being negative), he just burst out laughing - called himself an idiot, and gave me the "paperweight" for my troubles.

lucky74dog reacted to FuzzyYellow in You know you're a techie when. . .
when you never delete the installers after installing "just in case."
When you have a dedicated room just for the tech stuff you've gathered over the years.
When you have to make every computer you use faster than before you used it.
When you have a stack of install discs for various linux distros.
When you have broken computer parts from 1998 still saved "for later."
when you can't find another person to talk with who's "on your tech level."
When you don't have antivirus installed and still have never gotten a virus.
When you overclock a pc from 2003 just for fun
When it drives you crazy to see people throw away a 3 year old pc because "its slow."
That's all i can think of right now.

I'm on a road trip to washington DC with my family (Only sleeping there, then off to North carolina), and I set up a wifi hotspot with my phone to use the internet on my laptop. My sister heard this, and connected on to it to watch gossip girls on netflix, and, not knowing the difference between a wifi hotspot, and normal wifi used a Gb of data in 15 minutes! That's data my whole family of six uses, and regularly goes close to the limit(Not me though, my data almost never goes above 200 Mbs). And we also have 10+ days until the data resets, and almost 20 hours of car time. BTW, I use 150MBs for the whole trip(Or at least how far along we are already)
I didn't even know it was possible to use that much data that quickly, I didn't even know my phone's internet was that fast!
Also, I had to set it up without a password, because it wouldn't work with one for some reason, and on the highway, someone with a laptop (Definitely a laptop) connected to the hotspot on the road.
