addbot reacted to BoredErica in Do I need an amp? What is a good sound card for $50?
I've brought my HD800s to all sorts of devices - My cell phone with a stupid high noise floor, my O2 amp, my onboard, my netbook's onboard (which can barely run Chrome). All of them can take the HD800s up to a volume loud enough to make me uncomfortable. I can't believe people listen this loudly.

They're the same as the 702 but come with gel pads that increase the bass response a bit. Somewhere in-between a 712 and normal 701/702. If you were already planning on getting an AKG I'd say might as well grab the 7XX while you can. If you had something else in mind, I'd caution against getting pulled in to the hype.

Sennheiser's MM line is pretty good. Should be similarly priced to Beats's options.

Before we begin, a disclaimer. This is not an attempt to belittle the intelligence of people who own and enjoy a pair of M50's. This is merely to show that there are better recommendations to make.

Wait, that's not an M50X? But it looks so alike!

    Exactly.

Here's a nice review on the M40X a friend wrote up. In it, he explains the minimal differences in more detail. Sure, they sound different, but the M40X isn't worse just because it's a lower model. He even likes it better!

There's numerous other examples of a lower-tier headphone in a series being arguably just as good or better than higher-tiers (Sennheiser is notorious, DT990 is nearly the same as the T1, K 612 has better bass response than K 702, etc). It just begs to be pointed out, that top-end anything doesn't give you a compelling price-to performance. NVIDIA's Titan, Intel's Extreme Editions, Corsair's Dominator Platinum, ASUS ROG boards, etc etc just simply don't make sense unless you've got money to waste or a very specific professional use for them.

So, if you're in the market for a closed-back studio monitor with a removable cable, consider going a step down and save yourself some money.

You know those expensive headset holders that everybody wants to show off their expensive headsets, some people buy ridiculously expensive ones, and some people build them, but now "andreas_dock", from the Sweclockers forum, has come up with this genius idea.

You need an IKEA Galant toilet roll holder, only costs 5:99$

Then you simply attach it under a shelf or something like that and you have a cheap and nice looking headset holder in brushed aluminum

addbot reacted to madknight3 in Should I get a GTX 770 or a GTX 780 for gaming?
I'm enjoying my 770, it's good for everything I do, however there's a part of me that regrets not getting the 780 as there are some games I don't max settings with at 1080p (but close enough).

But who knows, then I could be regretting not getting the 780 ti. And then the 800 whatever when it comes out. Then the 800 whatever ti. So I guess my 770 is fine.

addbot reacted to GoodBytes in Questions about 60hz
If you have a 60Hz monitor. You are not limiting the graphics card. If the graphics card output 300fps, it will despite the monitor being 60Hz.
It must be noted however that 1Hz = 1 fps. This means that despite the monitor receiving 300fps, it can only display 60 fps among these 300.
The result, is tearing effect as you see on some games (usually fast paced ones), like in your case Mirror Edge. Basically the monitor tried to display 2 or 3 frames at ones, as it gets all these frames. The monitor is simply too slow at drawing these frames.
    The solution?
V-SYNC. V-Sync is a technology which make the graphic card limit it's frame output to 60fps, to match your monitor 60Hz (if you have a 120Hz monitor, it would be 120fps). This result in fixing the tearing issue. However, you may notice an increase input lag, depending on you. Usually only hardware FPS players, with twitch fast reflexes will really notice it. The input lag is not visible at all on slower paste games such as point and click adventure games, strategy games like StarCraft, Civilization, and so on.
Another issue with V-SYNC is that the game fps will pick a multiple of your monitor. What I am trying to say, is that if it can't render 60fps, it won't go down to 50fps, or 45fps, it will go down to 30fps, and if it's 25fps, it will down to 15fps. Meaning that if you have V-SYNC turned on in your game, and you don't have the computation power to render the game at a solid 60fps, you'll really notice the frame drops. Now the graphic card of recent years are bit wiser. If your game drops at 59 or 58 fps, it won't just drop you to 30fps. for that moment. It will output 59 or 58 fps to the monitor, as if V-SYNC was turned off, to reduce the visual performance drop. So you don't need to worry about it.
Video game console always have V-SYNC turned on. Games runs at either 30fps locked, or 60fps.

I'm all for the idea of buying the best system you can afford right now, but I really see no reason to spend $700 on a GPU if you're going to be playing games at 1080p @60r15 FPS..

I think you'll be better off in the long run by getting cheaper GPU now, and then upgrading to another upper-midrange GPU in the future.. There's no way to guarantee the longevity of a system, so I don't think it makes any sense to spend extra money now with the idea that you won't have to upgrade for 6 years..

With the cryptocurrency craze in America, prices of AMD's cards are insanely high.. I just checked Newegg right now, and most of the R9-290 (non X) are $650-700, pretty much the same as a 780TI..

The Syba? It's a better value, but probably not better performing than the E10. The Syba has a mic input (better value), but I think the output impedance is higher (worse performing for most headphones).

Bought one over 2 years ago before I knew better. There are two main issues:

    - The amp has a high output impedance, pairing it with a low impedance headphone (HD598 like I did) yields poor bass response.
    - Sometimes when I boot up, only the left channel works; I have to reboot to fix it.

I since bought a dedicated amp and I'm using the card as a DAC.

Don't buy it, there are better external solutions for half the price.

I think what they are trying to say is you won't see much diff in performance and a dual 7950 would be a cheaper and better option for you.
If you want a single gpu "upgrade" you have to bite the bullet and move to the 290x/780 territory.

Please don't compare nvidia clocks to amd clocks. Their gpu's have different architecture, so the value of mhz doesn't matter. The only time you can compare the frequency of one card to another is when they are the same model. For instance the msi gtx770 to asus gtx 770.

addbot reacted to helping in Poll: What is stopping people from buying the Radeon 7990?
Because it's a crossfire solution and is the same thing as having two slightly underclocked but more power efficient 7970's.
It has no expandability compared to a single card because quad CFX is annoyingly stupid. You wouldn't go around buying two cards at once when you can afford one better card. It's useful in SFF builds though (ironically.)

These are the least of the problems, that's not really why it's (imo) bad.
