Sheldon reacted to Blade of Grass in Linus Tech Tips Conglomorate Custom Signature/Banner Maker
Hey guys,
So as some of you know, I created a banner maker, located here. You can use this generator to generate a signature/banner that can be used anywhere (it outputs a PNG).
Images look like this.
** Please note, that while making the image, there are two options, Download and Preview. If you click Preview, you cannot right click and save the image (due to the way it's currently designed, I'm looking at fixing this). You will have to go back a page, and click the download button. After generating the image, you can access it at http://bladeofgrass.net/maker/images/<whatever your file name is> please note that images are deleted every hour **
Also, note that the test images on the right will open up in a light box with captions explaining font size and maximum characters (to fit properly).
After generating and downloading your image, you will have to upload it to a site like Imgur (or any other photo sharing service), as all generated images are deleted on the hour.
To add the image to your signature on the RSI forums, the code is
<div style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/UOLTT"><img src="<image url>" alt="Linus Tech Tips Conglomorate Signature" /></a></div>If you have any questions, comment and suggestions, feel free to say them! This is a work in progress, and I'm always open to improving things. -

Sheldon reacted to ForeseenVisionz in which one: gigabit ethernet adapter or new router/modem?
hey guys this is my situation right now,
so this is my internet: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3323699764
and this is the modem router right now: Technicolor TG582n
so im on wireless ( ) because i have no ethernet port in my room and im using the included wifi module on the maximus vi formula. my wifi sometimes disconnects because its probably too far so sometimes i go without internet for days. that absolutely ridiculous. so im wondering should i get a better modem/router or buy this ethernet gigabit adapter: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=16992 . but one qustion i had about the PoE is how does it work? do i just buy it, plug one into the modem downstairs and the other one in my room upstairs and plug that into my pc? is it that simple? sounds to good/easy to be true tbh. anyways please give me suggestions on what i should do. and if i do end up going with the PoE then ill probs down the road buy a new modem later on. thanks so much for any input. cheers

Sheldon reacted to kvnhaas24 in What is your home virtualization setup? VM's you use?
Dual Booting works yes, but things like exchange, sharepoint, and the like, makes having VM's in which you can just fool around with and destroy basically on demand is a pretty awesome thing.

A proxy won't work for you. They will see and stop it.....

The spec says to stay under 300' or 100 meters. Ive never used a powerline adapter that does full gigabit, but Cat 5e will.

Yes I tried that but from my research I need vCenter to create templates, looked under every option in vSphere but only has a cloning option ... and it seems it's just not the same thing lol

I'm 12 who do you think pays for power

Sheldon reacted to Darren in If you run something as a service, like a server....
I'm not really sure how to word this, but servers in the real world with real applications really don't care about power and having a low power state. They're all about processing power, reliability, cost efficiency and most importantly, uptime. That, and said servers don't run Windows for personal computers . Linux, because screw licensing fees.

A vpn would allow you to disconnect in the event of a DDoS which would no longer route the attacking traffic to your main ip. You could do this with a cheap vps and openvpn.
However, If you want active DDoS protection you will want something like CloudFlare.

This is the post they made back in September about the attack:
Well, we just got hit by a HUGE attack. Something that would nearly cost $50,000 - $100,000 to prevent a month, which is impossible with our current revenue.
"You were hit with a 35Gbps / 60,000,000 PPS attack which we had to null route. I think it reports at little in the control panel, but that is what we picked up on our edge routers. This is the biggest attack we've ever had." - Intreppid DDoS Protection
Many of you may say, "Get better protection." As I stated above, it'd nearly cost $50,000 - $100,000 a month. The server should be up within several hours, maybe even faster than that. The person probably paid a huge amount for this attack, so it shouldn't last long.

But that what Darren said. The ISP has the level and the hardware to do that. They can even send the DDOs to another datacenter or so on. A VPN will not work. Your best bet to load balancing (from a network side) with more one IP. So just have your ISP on call and call them and have a chat about their support for DDOS on one of their static IP's ( are renting the IP/S so they will want to care of it)

If someone knows your home's real IP, a VPN won't do shit. A VPN is like driving a different car, but if someone is blocking the road, you're still screwed.
You, yourself, cannot mitigate a DDoS attack against you. It does not make a single bit of difference if you have a different router. They are saturating the pipe between you and your ISP. If you are getting DDoS'd, escalate it to your ISP as they have the ability to do so by blocking the source at their edge, protecting you. Now if you're a residential level customer, they won't act with urgency. If you are in a position where your internet connection is so valuable, purchase a business grade connection and they will take care of you.

Sheldon got a reaction from Jack1 in Which is the better firewall distro?
Hi guys,
So I wanted to know what you guys think of Clearos and Pfsense, I have used both of them but I have set up a site to site vpn tunnel with pfsense using IPSec and I was thinking which is really better? Clearos or Pfsense, remember adding in all the other things that come with the firewall os. The market place on Clearos is a lot better and has a cleaner gui. What do you think?
Thanks Sheldon.
